Virginia Mariakakis Obituary

Mrs. Virginia K. Mariakakis, 92, of Britthaven of Chapel Hill, died December 18, 2006. Born in a small village on the island of Crete, Greek, she immigrated to America in 1928, and 1936 she met and married Tommy Efthimios Mariakakis in New York City. They moved to Chapel Hill in 1939 to start a restaurant business. Through the next 50+ years they had owned and operated seven restaurants until her husband passed away in 1997. they had two sons. Billy, their eldest son, predeceased both in 1968.
Virginia is survived by her son, Johnny, his wife, Catherine, and three grandchildren, Alexander, Ariana, and William.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2006 at Saint Barbara Church, 1316 Watts St. in Durham. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday evening at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
Memorials may be made to the South Orange Rescue Squad or The Memorial Fund of St. Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 1149, Durham NC 27702.
