Wanda Mahaffey Obituary

Wanda Lee Mahaffey

April 20, 1932 - August 31, 2016

Wake Forest

Wanda Lee Mahaffey, aged 84, went peacefully to join God on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016. She was born in Washington DC, on April 20, 1932, the daughter of the late Ralph Gordon and Pearl Louetta Lamb.

Lee was proudly independent and committed to learning. During her early adult life she worked for the FBI as a telephone operator under J. Edgar Hoover and served as administrative assistant in the NSA.. She later pursued first an RN degree from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia., then Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Counseling at Wilmington University in Delaware. Her passion was promoting mental health, and she dedicated over 3 decades to a career in psychiatric nursing and counseling in Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. Lee was also a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister, a lover of any project involving crafts, crochet, and quilting, and a nurturing caregiver of her many dogs and cats, particularly her beloved long haired Dachshunds.

She is survived by her son Glenn R. Mahaffey, and wife Rita Mahaffey, her daughter Pamela M. Hill and husband Douglass O. Hill, Jr., her brother Ronald G. Lamb and wife Shirley C. Lamb, and grandchildren Bethany Hill, Jonathan Hill, and Lauren Mahaffey. She is predeceased by her parents and her husband, Lorraine W. Mahaffey, Jr.

A family memorial service will be scheduled in the near future at Falls Church, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Lee's church would be appreciated. Lee's church family meant a great deal to her and would honor her memory: Hope Lutheran Church, 3525 Rogers Rd, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
