William Simpson Obituary

William Golden Simpson, Jr.

December 28, 1960 - November 24, 2024

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - William Golden Simpson, Jr., a relentless advocate for justice and a beloved member of the Chapel Hill community, passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 63. Born in Plymouth, North Carolina to Martha Blount Rodman Simpson and the late William Golden Simpson, Sr., William grew up around the waters of the Albemarle Sound. And, though he moved away, his love and attachment to that area never waned. He often returned to the Sound when he needed to feed his spirit and was happiest when he could be in a boat on a beautiful day with calm waters.

William first moved to Chapel Hill when he was accepted to the University of North Carolina, earning a degree in history in 1983 and a law degree in 1986. Following his graduation and acceptance to the North Carolina Bar, William worked as Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina until 1993 when he accepted a position in the Philadelphia Public Defender's office. His dedication to defending fundamental rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution earned him the Norman B. Smith Award from the ACLU-NC in 1994. For the next several years, in his position as a public defender, William continued to uphold the principles of equal justice, providing legal defense to those who might not otherwise have access and steadfastly upholding the principle of "innocent until proven guilty." In 2000, he moved back to Chapel Hill to join the law firm of Ferguson Stein Chambers Gresham & Sumter and, in 2012, Tin Fulton Walker & Owen. Throughout his 38-year legal career, William tirelessly advocated for those unable to defend themselves, championed the rights of all clients without prejudice, and always prioritized justice above personal gain.

Beyond his professional life, William was a man of many interests. He was an enthusiastic follower of music, all types, with a particular fondness for Americana and bluegrass. He loved to fish (even when he didn't catch anything), boat, swim, and ski. A great cook, he appreciated good food, regardless of whether it came from a food truck or a Michelin-starred restaurant. And he could always tell you where to find the best BBQ in any region of the state.

Those who knew William describe him as someone who endeavored to do the right thing, extended friendship to nearly everyone, and lived a life of purpose and passion. Beloved by his family, William was a devoted husband, caring father, cherished son and wise big brother. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Lee Simpson; his daughter, Jade Lee Simpson; his mother, Martha Blount Rodman Simpson; and his sisters, Elizabeth Simpson Davenport and Suzanne Simpson Koonce. The family invites you to consider a tribute gift to the ACLU-NC in his memory. https://action.aclu.org/give/tribute-aclu-nc.

I failed to learn of William's passing until last week. I'm floored. I knew him for a loooong time from NC progressive lawyer circles. Though I'm 10 years older, he was only a year behind me at UNC Law. My deepest condolences to William's family.

To my life long friend of sixty four years. So many wonderful memories from our childhood in Plymouth and Columbia through our adult lives. William was an amazing man who walked the walk when it came to advocating for justice. He also was a lot of fun, a good friend, and an amazing cook - although in law school we often teased him by noting that we weren't sure if that incredible fried chicken was because of his cooking skills and Martha Blount's old electric frying pan or if it was so good just because it took him so long to make the meal and we were all ravenous:-). That is just one of the many fun and fond memories I carry with me. I am very deeply sorry for your loss. William left this world way too soon. He will be missed by so many people. Sending love and hugs. Andi

William was such a good guy! We´ve been friends dating back to when he was the legal director at the N.C. ACLU and the work he did to defend our constitutional rights was both exemplary and inspiring. William truly made the world a better place ! I´ll greatly miss him and my condolences to his family

Wicked smart but had a level of unmatched humility that allowed him to be the first to laugh at himself. He was a fierce advocate for constitutional rights and the rule of law. Loyal friend and one of the kindest people I have ever known. I have known William for most of my life and the world was a much better place when he was in it. I will always cherish my memories of him - he made a difference....to me and many others.

William´s soul and caring for others were so big. And he was just so smart. To say he always fought for justice isn´t enough. He was able to comprehend every person and situation and every legal case and concept. His understanding was so large and all encompassing. He never hurried people up / he listened as long as you needed him, he was there for you. He helped lots of other lawyers because that was who he was. He was a warrior but a tender man at all the right places and you could see the caring in his eyes. I´ve never met anyone else like him. He didn´t judge, he helped. He never tried to prove he was better than others. He made time to do the right things, always. William was just right. I am so very sad that the world will go on without William. There will never be another like him. He was my friend in the law for 30 years. And I just felt better knowing William was out there every day fighting for those who couldn´t fight for themselves. Rest in peace, sweet William.

William was a beloved member of the Class of `93 at the Defender Association. He stayed in touch after he moved on. I cherished his commitment and compassion. He was the guy who was always kicked out of our office late at night while he was preparing to defend his client´s the next day in court. Always looking at that last issue. He also liked a good time, and we had many. His laugh was infectious. The "ripple in still water" he left us will resonate on and on. Roger Schrading.

Such sad news. I first met Will when he worked at the Defenders in Philly with me. A terrific lawyer and wonderful man. Years later, I had the good fortune of running trial skills programs for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy in Chapel Hill and Will became a devoted faculty member fore our program. He enjoyed working with new lawyers and imparting his considerable trial skills. I also had the opportunity to meet his daughter and see what a loving and caring dad he was.... My sympathies to all! A life well lived! Tom Innes

William was a wonderful office mate and mentor to me in Philadelphia. As a young lawyer, having his "knowledge and compassion for always doing the right thing" with me on a daily basis only strengthened my ambition to be the best advocate possible for those in need of defending their lives. William thank you for all guidance and memories.
