Robert McGoldrick Obituary

Robert Lawrence McGoldrick died at his home in Bloomfield, CT on March 12 after a courageous fight with cancer that inspired his friends and family. He was 77. He dedicated his life to serving God, his family, and his friends and strived to live each day to the fullest through his incredible work ethic and his genuine concern for brightening the lives of those around him. He will be remembered as a man who gave selflessly to his friends and family and built a legacy of client service through his career. He was born in Danbury, CT on March 20, 1934. He was the devoted son of the late John Howard and Esther McGoldrick. He attended St. Peter's Elementary School and Danbury High School and was recognized around Danbury for his motorcycle-driven Upsy Daisy ice cream business. He graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in May, 1956. One of his proudest accomplishments at Notre Dame was working as Head Football Manager. The University had a tremendous impact on Bob, and it would remain a fundamental part of his life. He spent countless hours giving back to Notre Dame, serving on the Alumni and Admissions Boards and as President of the Monogram Board. He passed on his love of Notre Dame to each of his six children who followed in his footsteps and graduated from the university. He created lasting memories with his family in the time they spent there whether watching football, attending mass at Sacred Heart, visiting the Grotto or sharing meals together at Bruno's. He was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1956 serving on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ticonderoga CVA 14. He would later spend 13 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. "Goldy" was an institution at CIGNA. He spent 35 years working at CIGNA (and its predecessor the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company). He officially retired in 1994 and spent the next decade consulting for the company. He started in 1959 working in the Hartford Group Office and later moved to the company's Bloomfield, CT headquarters where he stayed for the remainder of his career. His career was spent fostering close relationships with clients and mentoring and enriching the careers of countless employees. He was instrumental in founding CIGNA's National Accounts operation and in convincing the company to invest in the health care business. Both remain foundations of the company's success. Bob was a dedicated member of St. Timothy Church in West Hartford where he was an active parishioner for nearly 50 years. He served on the board of St. Francis Hospital and was a past Chairperson of the Northwest Catholic High School Annual Fund. Bob, in his early years, coached in both the West Hartford Youth Football and Baseball leagues. He and his wife, Jody, cherished spending summers at their Cape Cod home on Ayer Lane in Harwichport, MA and wintering at the Trafalgar in Highland Beach, FL. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joanne Donohoe McGoldrick, as well as his six children: Michael McGoldrick and his wife Marilyn of West Hartford, CT; Mark McGoldrick and his wife Carolyn of New Canaan, CT; Maureen McGoldrick Hann and her husband John of Norcross, GA; Patrick McGoldrick; Kelly McGoldrick Curran and her husband Tom of Pittsford, NY; and Christopher McGoldrick and his wife Kjeldy of West Hartford, CT. He also leaves 16 grandchildren: Brendan, Brian, Matt and Kyle McGoldrick; Erin and Holly McGoldrick; John, Robert and Lauren Hann; Thomas, Kate, Michael and Kevin Curran; and Owen, Peter, and Torin McGoldrick. He is survived by his sister Jean Mahoney of Southbury, CT. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 15 from 4-8 PM at The Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford, CT 06117. Funeral services will also be held at The Church of St. Timothy on March 16 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of St. Timothy or to a scholarship established in his name at the University of Notre Dame (donations to the "University of Notre Dame" and sent to: Robert McGoldrick Memorial Scholarship c/o Brian Green; University of Notre Dame; Office of Development; 1251 N. Eddy Street Commons, Suite 300; South Bend IN 46615). Ahern Funeral Home in Hartford, CT has charge of arrangements (www.ahernfuneralhome.com).

This was SUCH a great guy! Bob's family and our family were neighbors on Drury Lane over 40 years ago and his impact on how we have come to distinguish good neighbors from those who just "happen" to live nearby was formed by Bob's incredible interest in ALL those around him.

He and Jody have raised a wonderful family full of distinct and caring people and I'm so sorry for their loss. Bob McGoldrick was, and always will be, one in a million.

My family has you in our prayers.

Our dearest Jody and family,
Our deepest sorrow and prayers go out to each of you. What fond memories
when I think of the wonderful time we all
had when we traveled to Ireland with you and Bob to visit Ambassador Mike & Jane Sullivan. Bob was such a trooper, always making sure we all had a great time and continually sharing his joyous Irish humor!
I leave you with my favorite Irish Blessing:

best ships are Friendships and may they

Jody and family,
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Bob will always be a favorite part of my memories of you two and our trip to Ireland. The two of you were so gracious to the 'youngster' who tagged along with the classmates! Bob went out of his way to make me feel part of the group, but that's who he was! I am a better person for having met and spend time with him.

Love to all,

~Kelly

Bob and Jody have been instrumental for several years in enhancing Trafalgar and improving the building and the community. He was tireless in the many ways he helped us all and never lost his sense of humor. We learned a lot from him and could always count on him. He and Jody are two of the finest people I have ever met and I know that God has a special place for him in his kingdom. God bless you Bob.

March 14, 2012

On behalf of Principal/Chief Administrator Margaret Williamson and the entire Northwest Catholic High School community, I offer my very deepest sympathy on the passing of Bob McGoldrick.

Mr. McGoldrick was a cherished member of the NWC family for more than three decades -- as the proud parent of Michael McGoldrick '77, Mark McGoldrick '78, Maureen McGoldrick Hann '79, and Patrick McGoldrick '82; as a stalwart and generous benefactor, including as a parent leader of our Annual Fund; and most recently, as the beaming grandpa of Brian McGoldrick '11 and Matt McGoldrick '13. We will never forget the joy on his face at the Baccalaurate Mass on Brian's graduation day last June; what a wonderful memory to have etched in your hearts.

Please know that we will remember Mr. McGoldrick very specially in schoolwide prayer this week, as you celebrate his wonderful life, and will keep the entire family on our minds and close to our hearts in the days and weeks to come. We are very, very sorry for your loss.

March 14, 2012

Dear McGoldrick's, I am so so sorry for your loss! What a wonderful man! He has been so good to my family over the years with his jolly attitude and genuine concern!!! He cared so deeply! He will be very missed! Sorry! Maura Dolan McCarthy

As fellow Notre Dame football managers, Bob and I shared many an afternoon on Cartier Field. I enjoyed and appreciated working with him. Our paths diverged after graduation, but there wasn't a season when I didn't reflect on the responsibilities we once shared. I offer his family condolences and prayers. Jack Bower

Jody and family:

Please know what a wonder Bob was in my life ... an advisor, a role model, and a dear, dear friend. He epitomized for me the true gentleman ... gentle and kind, warm and generous, caring and strong. During my early days in the Notre Dame admissions office, he sat on my advisory board and guided me to do and be better than I otherwise could have done. l am grateful he was with me and stood by me during my early career ... my life's journey has been better because of his presence along the way. Thank you for sharing him with me ... my life is fuller because of Bob McGoldrick.

Jody & Family:
I want you know what a true inspiration Bob has been for me. During my early years in the Notre Dame Admissions Office, his friendship, advice, and loving care made such a wonderful difference in all that I hoped to accomplish as a young administrator. His presence on our intitial advisory board, NASCAB, was invaluable and incredibly important in guiding me during my early career. I have often thought that if only my ancesters had not dropped the "Mc" from my surname, I could possibly have become a truly wise and "gentle" man, as Bob was throughtout his life, in all that he did and all that he was, as a husband, a father, advisor, and friend.
