Jack, thank you for being my mentor (my first mentor) and showing me the way of the world. So many good times together. Thank you for my introduction to and my love for West Virginia and her people. Thank you for showing me the railroad and how it works. Thank you for tolerating me and having patience. I just can't believe it is over. I'll never forget you.
I joined the railroad engineering department beginning July 1, 1976, the year of our nation's bicentennial. After a 6-week tour and learning experience around the railroad, we were given our assignments (there were 6 recruits including me). I wanted to stay in Philadelphia, where I grew up and where my girlfriend lived. Failing that, I wanted to be as close as possible. I was offered Cincinnati or Grafton. I chose Grafton, thinking it was in Maryland and would be close to Philadelphia. Well, it turns out that Grafton is in West Virginia. Much closer than Cincinnati, but still a long drive. I arrived in Grafton about the end of August and reported to work on the Monongah Division, reporting to Hayden Curtis, the same as Jack. Hayden wasn't a people person, but Jack was. He took me under his wing, and the rest is history, as they say. Being with Jack was just full of adventures (some really crazy ones!!) but always good times.
Rest in peace Jack.

Jack was a favorite uncle of mine through marriage. Just a great guy to be around. We hadn't talked in years, decades actually, only because life takes you in different directions. I think about him often, especially when someone's playing a 12-string guitar. Tonight a guitar reminded me of him, and I decided to call. When the message said this number is disconnected, I said, You better not be dead. Then I found this obituary. Don't lose touch with the ones you love. I'll miss you and think of you often, Jack. Sure would have enjoyed our conversation tonight.

My heartfelt sympathys go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope the words in 1 Thessalonians 4 : 14 can bring you some comfort. Knowing that there is a future for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
