In 2010 my wife and I bought a rambling fixer of a house in Woods Hole as a summer home. Among other things in making the house better, we installed a new lawn, which unfortunately began sprouting a forest of crab grass weeds. I spent a whole lot of time bent over that new lawn destroying (as best I could) one crab grass weed after another. My weapon of choice in this endeavor? An old screwdriver. One day in June in 2011 as I toiled away killing crab grass weeds, my neighbor up the way on Bowditch Road began noticing my labors each day as he walked from his house to his post behind the counter at the Old Barn liquor store in "downtown" Woods Hole. That neighbor was David Marshall. On what was probably his tenth viewing of my weed removal work, David stopped on a sidewalk about 15 feet away from me killing weeds in my backyard - at a point where we were separated by a low hedge. I had not noticed his arrival there by the hedge. But I did not fail to notice these fateful words from David Marshall..."You know of course that they will just grow back."
Funniest thing I had ever heard! I walked over to the hedge to meet this mensch of a person - this laconic, friendly, funny, dear person. We introduced ourselves and found we were both Davids. That pretty much cemented things - we became fast friends, and in short order we concluded (naturally) that Davids were, almost to a person, pretty cool people.
I will so miss David. And, I would have missed him even if his name was Fred.
David was my friend, and I loved him.

Dave was a very dear friend to me.
I will miss seeing his smiling face and terrific sense of humor. I hope you were able to follow my Facebook posting of his passing. So many colleagues and former students remembered him as their favorite teacher and mentor. That is indeed a tribute to an educator who touched so many! In the modern dictionary next to the term, "the salt of the earth" there is a picture of Dave Marshall ...

There can only be a few teachers that you never forget as a result of their talent and gift to teach well. Add to that true wit and humor and you get David Marshall. He always made me feel like he cared personally for each one of us. Thank you sir!

Dave led a loving, purposeful life, one worth emulating. There was something very noble about him, yet he was always humble and gracious. My condolences to his family. I´m so glad I had the opportunity to learn from him at SCSU, teach with him at East Haven HS and get to know him.

My condolences to the Marshall family.
Mr. Marshall was my high school English teacher( class of 1973) and a tremendous influence in my life then and often in many aspects of my life. He was definitely , by me, the most memorable and inspiring teacher with a kind of wit that still makes me smile.
Rest in peace, Mr. Marshall.
