Dorothy Fink Obituary

Dorothy (Hodes) Fink
Dorothy (Hodes) Fink (Guilford, New Haven, Brooklyn, NY). 12/20/1927 — 09/23/2021. Erasmus HS (1945). Mount Holyoke (1949), Magna cum Laude, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Predeceased by her husband, William B. Lyle, and is deeply missed by her son, Peter Fink, daughter, Lisa Hodes, granddaughter, Jingju Martin, and her beloved dog, Jiggs.
As the pioneer owner for 20 years of Zimmerman and Fink, a unique store in Guilford that focused on function and design, Dorothy was a generous mentor who cultivated creativity and independence in her staff, many of whom felt she was influential in their lives and careers. Dorothy was known for her savvy, humor, and her love of good food and cooking. She was an advocate for good causes all her life. She worked as an associate development editor at McGraw-Hill, and semi-retired as a freelance editor.
Dorothy saw the mystery in nature, the elegance in art, and the cleverness of design. She knew there was nothing better than the wet nose of her dog next to her head on a pillow. She knew the words to every song by Cole Porter, which she sang shamelessly out of tune.

I remember Dot as a person with a strong personality and great taste, as displayed in her store in Guilford. My husband Moses and I bought solid oak twin bed frames from Zimmerman and Fink, one of which I donated to the ABC Scholars´ house a few years ago, the other one still in use over forty-five years later.
