Frank Caparulo, of Orange, CT, born May 12, 1938 in El Paso, TX, passed away suddenly on November 28, 2017 in Montclair, NJ. Mr. Caparulo was known as Frankie, Cappy, Coach, Dad, Granpa and Poppa to the family and friends who best loved him for his raucous sense of humor, his deep, abiding love for his family and a lifetime of compassion for his fellow man. He was predeceased by his mother, Alicia Elorreaga Traweek, father Ralph Caparulo, and brother, Steve Caparulo, and by his beloved and faithful therapy dog, Tillie. Mr. Caparulo is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Hart Devereux Caparulo, his brother, Ralph Caparulo (Nancy), Galway, NY, sister Rose Cali (Johnboy), Montclair, NJ, and sister Michele Micarelli (Anthony), New Haven, CT. He leaves his children, Ellen Lelas, Bellevue, Washington, Frank Caparulo (Judy), Sierra Vista, Arizona, Tony Robinson (Cheryl), Monroe, Washington, Caroline Tarlton LaMorte (Ron), Darien, CT, and ten grandchildren, Heather Robinson, Jessie Lelas, Kayleigh Caparulo, Jadzia Caparulo Funk (Sean), Frank Rylan Caparulo, Jon Robinson, Gabe Robinson, Nicholas LaMorte and Jackson LaMorte. A graduate of Wilbur Cross High School and Southern Connecticut State University, Class of 1961, Frank played on the only undefeated football team in the University's history. He coached football at Hamden High School, earned an MS at Southern, and taught as a special educator in the New Haven Public Schools and other schools across the state of CT. He was known nationally and internationally for his work in the field of sex education and treatment of persons with intellectual disabilities. Mr. Caparulo served as a founding member of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), and was a member of the Academy of Forensic Examiners. He retired from the State of CT, Southbury Training School in 2012. In recent years he spent time bookbinding and volunteering as a tutor at St. Martin de Porres Academy. Most recently he was contracted with the New Jersey Re-entry Corporation, a non-profit organization working with parolees.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Orange Congregational Church, 205 Meetinghouse Ln., Orange. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Frank's memory to Saint Martin de Porres Academy, 208 Columbus Avenue, New Haven, CT 06519, or to Creative Arts Workshop, 80 Audubon Street, New Haven, CT 06510, or to a charity of your choice.
