FRED DANFORTH Obituary

DANFORTH, FRED C. Fred C. Danforth, co-founder of Ecosystem Investment Partners, the largest private equity firm in the United States devoted to land and stream restoration, died at his home in Mattapoisett, MA on March 17th. The cause of death was gall bladder cancer. Founded in Baltimore in 2006, EIP pioneered a new “ecological asset class” by developing wetland and stream restoration projects in the United States that deliver market returns for investors. EIP has over a half billion dollars under management, making it one of the largest sources of private capital for ecological restoration projects in the world. Mr. Danforth began his career in finance with Citibank in New York City. He left there to become president of a regional bank in Tulsa, OK. In 1986, he co-founded Capital Re-source Partners, a private equity investment firm located in Boston. He retired from CRP in 2002 and shifted his time and energies to several business partnerships and related activities in Montana. Born and raised in Brewer, ME, Mr. Danforth graduated from Yale University in 1973 where he played varsity football and lacrosse. A scholarship student himself, he endowed a scholarship fund at Yale to support Native American students from reservations. Mr. Danforth is survived by his wife, Carlene Larsson, and two sons, Trygg Larsson Danforth and Pierce Danforth Larsson. A memorial service will be held April 9 at 5 p.m. at the Boston Harbor Hotel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Fred C. Danforth ’73 Scholarship Fund at Yale University or The Blackfoot Challenge, a non-profit focused on conserving and enhancing the natural resources in Montana’s Blackfoot Valley. The Yale Alumni Magazine brought the sad news of Fred's passing. We were both undergraduates in Branford College and he was always a lot of fun. He was much appreciated, it seemed, by the whole dorm. My condolences to his family and friends, who, I would say, should count yourselves lucky, like me, to have known him.

My heart sank moments ago when I saw Fred's name in the "in memoriam " section of the Yale Alumni Magazine.
Although I graduated from Yale College in 1968 , I enjoyed Fred's friendship during his undergraduate days and my years at the Yale School of Atchitecture . I enjoyed driving him and Dick Jauron to weekend social events at Vassar . We had great times together .
He gifted his Yale football helmet to me and it sits on my den shelf today .
Although our paths did not cross following our Yale days , I thought of him often and always with a smile .
I share my sincere , if very tardy , condolences to the Danforth family .
God bless my friend Fred .

I worked with Mr. Danforth on Mitigation Banking in Montana. He seemed to honestly care about the environment. I wish his family strength in these trying times.
