Max Schultz Obituary

Max Schultz
Max Schultz, 95, of Killingworth, Connecticut, passed away on December 20, 2025 at the Harbor Chase Nursing Care Center in Branford. He was the loving husband of Romy Schultz, who died in 2021, with whom he shared more than five decades of life. Max was born in New York City, but spent most of his youth in Allentown, PA. He was a graduate of William Allen High School (1948) and received a bachelor's degree from Penn State University (1952), enlisting in the U.S. Air Force upon graduation. He served in the USAF for nine years and proudly flew the legendary F-86 Saber jet in combat during the Korean conflict. Later, Max relocated to northern California and worked in the restaurant/food industry until 1967, when he met his wife and the love of his life. After relocating to Port Washington, NY, he and Romy, with business partners David and Amy Jaffe, founded the Automatic Fastner Corp (AFC), securing several patents for the use of rivets in the automobile industry. AFC eventually settled in North Branford, CT in 1972 where Max managed production until the company was sold in 1996. Max and Romy moved to Killingworth in 1972, where they lovingly raised their daughter, Gabrielle, and grand-daughter, Callie.
When Max and Romy retired, they spent their time enjoying cultural, culinary, and civic pursuits. Max was a volunteer member of the Killingworth Planning Commission. With Romy, Max enjoyed a wonderful life at their beautiful home in Killingworth, full of gardens and the many family and friends they entertained at elaborate dinners and parties. Their home was warm and always filled with good food, drink, conversation, and generations of rescued West Highland White Terriers. Love of classical music and opera found them often in New York City, where they enjoyed season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera and hosted "Marie Antoniette" celebrations to mark Romy's birthday-a much anticipated annual event for many family and friends.
Max was a lifelong lover of athletics, both as a participant and fan. He often told stories about his time as the "Taxi Squad" quarterback at Penn State University. His love and dedication to PSU football never ended. He was also a devoted fan of the New York Football Giants and the San Francisco Giants. All of this was secondary in the past twenty years to his commitment and passion for the University of Connecticut Women's Huskies basketball team.
Survivors: Daughters, Leslie Warthman (husband, Randy), Westerville, OH; Gabrielle Schultz, Hartford, CT. Grandchildren: Callie Schultz (Max's devoted caretaker); Justus Nethero, Taran Warthman, Alexandra Warthman. Six great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews.
Max was predeceased by his parents, Irving and Bella Schultz; his brothers, Murray and Henry Schultz; and children, Andrianne (Nethero) and Kim "Mimi" Schultz.
Instead of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in Max's name to the VA Hospital of Connecticut, or to the Center for Breast Cancer at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale School of Medicine, in New Haven, CT.

Dear Schultz Family,

I was deeply saddened to hear of Max´s passing. As his realtor, I had the pleasure of working with him in Killingworth and will always treasure the meals and conversations we shared-from Viennese dishes to the perfect cheeses and wines-and his boldness in asking and answering the right questions. I admired his generosity, warmth, curiosity, and business savvy, all of which made working with him a true pleasure.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

With sympathy,
Jeffrey Leitz
