Richard McKernan Obituary

MCKERNAN, RICHARD ROBERT Richard Robert McKernan, 67, of Berlin CT passed away on Monday, March 28th, at Middlesex Hospital with his loving wife, Patricia McKernan, at his side. Born in New York City on March 20, 1944 to Thomas McKernan and Mary (Rogers) McKernan, Richard grew up next to Long Island Sound in Clinton, CT. He graduated from Morgan High School in 1962 and earned an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Middlesex Community College. He was employed at Pratt & Whitney as an inspector for 38 years, retiring in 2002. He also served in the US Army in the Panama Canal Zone from 1969 to 1971. Beloved by friends and family, Richard was quiet, gentle, patient, and reliable. He greatly enjoyed spending time with loved ones and was known for his dedication to his grandchildren. A car enthusiast since high school, Richard had a particular love for the Austin Healey sports car. He took great pride in his 1959 model in which he and his wife, who were very active in the Austin Healey Club of America, often attended conclaves across North America. Richard served as the president of the AHCA's Northeast Region for two years. He also loved sailing and spent many happy hours on Fisher's Island Sound with his friends and family. Along with Patricia, Richard traveled to many locations such as Greece, England, South America, the Caribbean and Hawaii. He particularly enjoyed their trip to China due to the friendliness of the people he met there. Richard was known as a skilled woodworker who enjoyed working on projects for friends and family. He built decks for several homes, pieces of furniture for his children, and even volunteered his skills for the Rebuilding Together charity. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Patricia McKernan, sons Kevin McKernan and Robert Korb, daughter Rebecca Korb, grandchildren Shaila Hall-Korb, Robert R. Korb, and Jasmyne Ross-Lundgren, as well as his brother Thomas McKernan and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Saturday April 2 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington, CT. Donations may be made in his memory to NPR.

Richie, A pleasure to have hung out with you through our teen-age years. If I remember correctly your first car was a 1940 Ford hot rod sedan, followed by a '56 Chevy convertible. My first Austin Healey was a '59.
We sure had a lot of fun on our boats in the harbor and hanging out on Cedar Island. You will be missed, Dick

Dear Pat and family.
Pat and i were especially sad to hear of the passing of Rich, we had a lot of fun with both of you at he healey events. I will never forget his 10 inch wizard that he had. I have been looking for one of them for about 4 years and have not found one yet. If there is anything we can do for you please feel free to let us know. We can not be there with you as we are in Fla for the winter but we will say a prayer for you and Rich and think of you.

Sincerely

Dick & Pat Miner

I especially like the mention of the Austin Healey. I enjoyed the conversations Richard and I would have at Pratt about his. He would tell me all about and the trips he and Pat would make in it to the Club events.
