Richard Schwartz Obituary

Schwartz, Richard
Richard Derecktor Schwartz died at home on October 10. He was 92 and grew up in Meriden. Undeterred by polio, contracted at the age of 18, "Red" earned his B.A and Ph.D. at Yale University. He was a Sociologist of Law, taught at Yale, Northwestern, served as Dean of the Law School at SUNY Buffalo and was the Ernest I. White Professor Emeritus at the College of Law of Syracuse University. He conducted research in Israel (1950) and India (1963). He was co-founder of the Law and Society Association. In 1981 he was a co-founder of the Syracuse-Area Middle East Dialogue Group. He co-authored and edited numerous books. He was a fervent advocate for world peace and was passionately devoted to his friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emilie; his children, David, Jane, and Debbie, his sons-in-law, Arthur Maisel and David Tykulsker, his grandchildren, Nadia, Vera and Sam, and his devoted dog, Carly.

You were a mentor, teacher and profound inspiration and force for good who influenced everything I did after working as your Research Assistant at Syracuse.

October 10th was the date my own father died and i shall light candles and say prayers for you both as long as I live.
