Schilling Douglas Owen Schilling of Belle Chasse will be remembered as a legend. Known for his dagger-sharp wit, big-heartedness, and desire to put others' needs before his own, Schilling, 70, passed away on March 17, 2016. Schilling radiated happiness and found great joy in making those around him laugh. His generosity was boundless, and he called them like he saw them, in any situation. Through life's challenges, he consistently maintained a positive attitude while putting others at ease. Schilling was born on July 19, 1945, to John and Emma Schilling. He taught social studies for 44 years at Belle Chasse High School (BCHS) and was named Louisiana State High School Teacher of the Year in 2000. He loved Belle Chase High School and will be remembered by the thousands of students he taught as an entertaining instructor who brought history to life. During his service to BCHS, the many events he planned and coordinated were dubbed "Douglas O. Schilling Productions," known for their quality and attention to detail. Schilling was preceded in death by his parents, adopted son, Ronald S. Brooks, and nephew David P. Hayden. He is survived by three brothers: Larry E. Schilling (wife Janice) of Belle Chasse, LA; Allen W. Schilling (wife Lo-Beth) of Cumming, GA; and Raymond C. Schilling (wife Sharon) of Pineville, NC. Back in the 1980s,I got a call from LEAndrer Perez Jr about his BelleChasse neighbor Doug SCHILLING. Hearing Hollywood was contemplating a remake of Sam WOODS' & Robert DONAT's classic GOODBYE Mr CHIPS, long time film buff Lea--aware that I had friends "in the Business"--felt that they might at least want TO talk to talk to the BCHS Prof. whose SCHILLING Productions were already making a splash in the dramatic arts.

Acting on Lea's suggestion, I actually talked to a couple of visiting filmmakers. But Napoleon Avenue, while home to Manale's Oyster Bar, was NO Hollywood Blvd. (venue of the legendary Schwab's Drug Store). Accordingly, nothing came of these efforts. And, admittedly, relocating GBMC author James Hilton's British "Public School to the wilds of Plaquemine Parish would require a stretch of the imagination. Moreover, when I suggested to Lea (who "had the money") that he finance the film himself, he apparentlty didn't hear me.So this version of GOODBYE MR CHIPS never got off he ground

Anyway, Hats off to Lea Perez. True, his eventful career (a Hollywood "blockbuster" in itself if there ever was one) had its share of both Rights and Wrongs, All the same his lobbying on behalf of Douglas Schlling had all the earmarks of a great "casting coup".

Doug Schillings was Mr. Belle Chasse High School. What a wonderful legacy he has left to all his students over the years. Not many teachers can accomplish what Doug Schillings has done to inspire so many children. I'm sure Doug will be helping The Lord with any big productions in Heaven. May he rest in Peace.

I never envisioned this day coming so quickly. In one word, to sum up what Schill was: "Perfectionist".

He was truly a visionary that brought out the best in people. He always announced the BCHS band as the Pride of Plaquemines Parish. In my eyes, HE is the Pride of Plaquemines Parish.

Rest in Peace. Hope to be on your team again in the future.

Mr. Schill you had an impact on my life that is still with me to this day. In my Frosh and Soph years ('75 and '76) I only knew you from the zany football pep rallies... they were awesome. But then the privilege to have you as my teacher in '77 and '78. Wow. A true legend. This member of the Class of '78 is forever grateful for everything you gave because you gave everything.
