Elizabeth Core Obituary

CORE ic e Elizabeth Davies Core surrounded by her family went to be with our Lord on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the age of 89. A native of Ponchatoula, she was born on November 17, 1919. She was the daughter of the late John A. and Celia Parker Davies. She is survived by her children, Charlene Hughes (Danny) of Metairie, LA; Leroy Core(Carole) of Travelers Rest, SC; Kay Fortenberry of Lacombe, LA; and Fay Core of Decatur, GA; her grandchildren, David Parta, Allison Parta, Sharon Core, Cathleen Carman; great-grandchildren, David Parta Jr., Alyssa Parta, Austin Carman; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, George Davies and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Core, sister, Albena Davies; brothers, Johnny and Steven Davies; grandsons, Barry Parta, Hunter Fortenberry; and son-in-law, Wade Fortenberry. Alice was a retired Food Service Supervisor at Southeastern Louisiana University. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ponchatoula, the Harmony Sunday School Class, the Young at Heart Club of FBC, the Sunshine Club, the Golden Age Club and the Golden Lions Retirees of SLU. She was a former volunteer with the March of Dimes. She was an artist who shared her work with family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and was a recent recipient of the Ponchatoula Gardenetts Garden of the Month. Friends will be received Monday, June 15, 2009, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 1:00 pm with Dr. David Cranford officiating. Interment will follow in the Davies Cemetery in Ponchatoula. The family wishes to thank Elaine and Mary of Prime Care Home Health, North Oaks Hospice and Dr. Greg Allen for their care and support. While Alice had many caring friends and relatives, the family wishes to say a special thank you to her cousin, George Parker whose weekly visits were treasured by her and her family. He brought much joy, laughter and comfort to them. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Louisiana Baptist Children's Home or Louisiana Special Olympics. I didn't know she had passed. She and her sister were a great influence to me as they "sponsored" me while I was in the Mizpah Boys Home of Elmer, Louisiana. I will be forever grateful for her generosity and friendship.
