Gene Freese Obituary

FREESE Gene "Augie" Freese passed away on Tuesday June 19th, 2013. Gene was a well known sports personality in New Orleans. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Gene came to New Orleans pursuing a career in pro baseball. After an impressive stint with the New Orleans Pelicans minor league franchise, he went on to have a successful career in major league baseball for 12 years. This included making it to the World Series in 1961 as the starting third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, who lost to the fabled 1961 NY Yankee team that included Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. During the rest of his major league career, he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros. After retiring as a player, Gene managed the AA minor league Shreveport Captains for two years before retiring from baseball. He is a member of the Diamond Club Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Professional Baseball Hall of Fame. Gene raised his family in the New Orleans area. He is well known and was much loved in the community. He had a wide circle of close and loyal friends. Gene owned and operated the Basin Lounge sports tavern for many years, sharing his wisdom with many patrons and good friends. He had a marvelous sense of humor and quick wit, which he retained until the last day. He was always there for his children and grandchildren when they needed help. He is greatly missed. Gene is survived by his wife Mary, sons; Tim (Daphne) and Terry (Gayle), daughter Amy Freese-Carter (Daniel); their mother Barbara Pennington, grandchildren; Allison Goodrum (William), Jennifer Lyons (Chance), Chelsea, Erin, Emily, Devon, Colt, Chase and great-grandchildren Luke and Cayden. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to Make a Wish Foundation or Operation SMILE. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (in Metairie Cemetery) on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM. To Gene's Family, I knew Gene way back in the 40's, we played basketball in South Wheeling. Gene was several years ahead of me at Ritchie and Wheeling High and while not close friends I always thought the world of him. Great Guy and athlete. My family left Wheeling in 1953 for Calif and I was able to see Gene once in San Francisce when he was here playing for the Pirates against SF Giants. Really sorry for your loss.

Gene was a great person, ball player, family man and friend. I will never forget the wonderful memories
of getting together with Gene, Billy Martin, Mickey Mantle
and Coach Ron Maestri eating crawfish and drinking beer in New Orleans. Billy and Mickey loved Gene and our great city. We extend our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the entire Freese Family. He will be missed.

To the Freese Family:
I only knew Mr. Gene as a fan. I was only 10 years old when he played for the Pelicans in 1954. He was the best ball player on the team, and he was always kind to us kids. He always had time for an autograph or a kind word. I followed his career as I got older, and was proud to have met him on his way up. He will always be a hero to me, and he will be missed. My best wishes and condolences to you all...
