6 years now. We all still miss you and talk of you often. This photo came up yesterday of 7 years ago. John is on the left, Robert Serio on the right. In the 1960's John was responsible for Robert getting into reenacting by being in a magazine with his family. Robert got to meet John in 2013 for the first time. This was the last time he saw him. This was the last time John played his accordion in camp. We had a great time. We will never forget him.

John, you've been gone 5 years. We all miss you every day and still talk about you. You were a important part of my life and a great friend. I miss talking to you and sitting around the campfire listening to you play the accordion. Life has a hole in it that your absence is hard to fill.

The photo of John (in his USS Carolina uniform honoring the Navy schooner in the War of 1812) was at the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans, January 10, 2015, at Chalmette Battlefield. John was a living history participant at the park and he will be sorely missed. He told me how especially happy he was that he was on the battlefield this year - at such an historical event - the 200th commemoration. John's presence during the bitter cold that weekend was truly honorable. It meant a lot to him and to us- John's dedication and spirit will be remembered by us all at the park.

We will all miss John. I feel honored to have had this photograph taken with him. He was always so kind and much fun to talk with and share stories with - a true soldier, scholar and gentleman in the best of traditions.

I'm sorry to hear of John's passing. I met John in 1977 working for Bell at Metairie Lawn. We both liked shooting and black powder. he was a great big nice guy. I went on to different jobs but John recognized me one day at the Chalmette battlefield. He was talking to me and it took me a few seconds to recognize him because he was missing over a hundred pounds. The battlefield was where IU saw him for the next few decades until I retired. I decided to go the Confederate museum since I had never been. As I was digging out my money, I heard "Randy, is that you?". I looked up and it was John wearing his moustache and beard old guy disguise. I stopped and visited whenever I was in the area after that. I'll miss him. John, I'll see you around the bend soon enough.

Dear Mary Ann,
Dave and I are so very saddened to learn off John's passing. His uncle from Colorado visited with him at the museum when he was in town and was so impressed with his knowledge and friendly manner. We are keeping you and Marshall and the entire family in our prayers.
