Josephine Cangelosi DeMatteo

Josephine Cangelosi DeMatteo entered the gates of Heaven, on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 7:00 am. Age 81 years, a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans. Preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Salvatore DeMatteo. Loving mother of Felicia Pigna (Vincent), Henry DeMatteo (the late Sally), Gina Burke (Karl) and Sheva DeMatteo. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Daughter of the late Charles and Josephine Cangelosi. Her sister, Jenny, lovingly raised Josie after her mother died in childbirth. Preceded in death by her siblings, Rosie Thibodeaux, Jenny Pelitere, Frank Cangelosi, Charles Cangelosi, Joseph Cangelosi, Sherron Leggio and survived by Debbie Palumbo. Mrs. DeMatteo graduated from Alcee Fortier High school. She married the love of her life in 1960 and had four children. Mrs. DeMatteo defied the odds as she suffered three brain tumors with the first at the young age of 31 and many other illnesses during her life. We would like to give our special thanks to Karen Vanoni and Charle Schmidt, who lovingly cared for Mrs. DeMatteo for many years in her home. Many thanks to the hospice nurses, especially Melanie and Debra and all the aids who cared for Mrs. DeMatteo during her two years in hospice. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, August 23 2023 at St. Rita Church, 2729 Lowerline St., New Orleans. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am with rosary and Divine Mercy starting at 11:00 am. Interment will follow Mass in Metairie Cemetery where she will be buried alongside her husband.
