Lawrence Arcell Obituary

Lawrence Anthony "Larry" Arcell died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 6, 2021, at the age of 69. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, the son of the late Isabella (Lanza) Arcell and Andrew Joseph Arcell. Larry was a graduate of Hall High School, Class of 1970, and arrived on Tulane University's campus that fall. He would spend the next 52 years in and around the New Orleans area, where he practiced law, met and married his beloved wife Kathy, and raised a family. He adored his "girls" – wife Kathy, stepdaughter Rachal, daughter Caroline, granddaughter Danielle and, most recently, his granddaughter Katherine. During his long and courageous struggle with cancer, it was his "girls" (and of course his grandson Declan) who inspired him to fight on. As an undergraduate at Tulane, Larry was heavily involved in student activities and campus life. He became a reporter for the weekly paper, the Tulane Hullabaloo, where he rose through the ranks, finally being named Editor-In-Chief. After graduation, he became a professional working journalist and reporter, writing for newspapers on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for several years. In the fall of 1977, Larry returned to his alma mater to study law and was awarded his Juris Doctor degree from Tulane University and practiced law for more than 40 years. Larry was a Proctor in Admiralty and an accomplished maritime trial lawyer. He represented clients and their families in Louisiana, Mississippi, New York and throughout the northeast US. He was active in the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association, served as the Vice-Chair and then Chair of the American Association for Justice Maritime Law Section from 1999-2001, represented the United States at the International Maritime Organization in London, and was a sought-after speaker at various maritime law educational seminars. As much as Larry loved politics, Mardi Gras, and his Boston Red Sox, he developed an even larger love of soccer during his many years of coaching and supporting his daughter Caroline from the sidelines. Larry became a lifelong and well-respected member of the Crescent City Soccer Referees Association, where his quick-wit and smile made him a natural as a referee. Larry is survived by his wife of 39 years, Katherine "Kathy" Rachal Arcell, their daughter, Caroline Arcell Burdo (Ted) of Atlanta, his stepdaughter, Rachal Bezou-DeNoux (Danny DeNoux), and his three grandchildren Danielle Bezou-DeNoux, Declan Bezou-DeNoux, and Katherine Burdo. Larry is survived by his youngest brother Paul Arcell (Cathleen), and their children, Christopher, Andrew, and Katherine, of Caldwell, NJ, and his stepfather, Lewis C. Nye of West Hartford, CT. Larry is preceded in death by his brother Andrew John "Andy" Arcell of West Hartford, CT. His family would like to thank his dedicated caregiver Ms. Trenetta Williams. In memoriam, contributions can be made to the Second Harvest Food Bank of South Louisiana 700 Edwards Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70123 https://no-hunger.org/. A celebration and memorial of Larry's life to be held this fall. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. New Orleans, LA 70119 is in charge of arrangements. Just saw in the Tulanian about Larry who I knew in college as a much respected student journalist. I followed his impressive career from afar over the years and was always impressed by his enthusiasm for everything he tackled. My condolences to his family.
