Shirley, Belinda & I are so sorry to hear of Mark´s passing. I spoke with him on the phone and he told me he thought he was getting out soon and would call back later.
He was a true friend and the only one I worked with that kept in contact with me all the time I was in Nigeria. He really did like that nasty tasting German coffee I brought back to him, didn´t he? I really enjoyed meeting with him for an occasional lunch here and there. He worked on a friend´s radio for me that I couldn´t fix. He was always busy with something. He was a real inspiration with his tinkering with music (expressed a desire to learn the tuba! Really? ), turn-tables, re-capping radios, you name it. Always seemed to be learning something new.
I know it´s been a few months. So sorry about that. He´s the first close friend of mine that has passed. Rocked me back on my heels. Hope you and your family are doing well.

After leaving Shell, I met with Mark a few times along the way. Here's one dated 4/18/2005. 19 years ago, almost to the day. He was a great friend at work and our friendship continued even after I left. I was working with him in Utilities when Mark got the phone call that Shirley had gone into labor, the day that Brett was born. He texted me when I was working in Nigeria. We both decided on a date to meet up for lunch at Middendorf's on I-55, roughly halfway between our houses. When I arrived, there was only one other vehicle in the parking lot. It was raining.... and a Monday. Middendorf's was closed! I called Mark to tell him to turn around if he hadn't already got on the elevated part of I-55. It turned out that he was in the only other vehicle in the parking lot. We had a big laugh about it and decided on where to go eat. He was a remarkable man and I will miss him very much.
Mark, thank you for being such a wonderful friend.
Shirley, Brett... I am so sorry for your loss.
