Matthew 5:16 reads “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.
Nathan Parker lived a Christian life, a life of service. Long live the spirit of Nathan Parker. His transitioning into the spirit world gives pause to the leaders of Justice and Beyond to take note of a life of purpose dedicated to the advancement of African-Americans and all people.
Nate, as he was affectionately called, believed in the power of organizing and strength in unity. He was a union man, and pushed for all workers to ban together for better wages and benefits. He was dedicated to making his community know the dangers of the contaminated soil beneath their homes and how to unify and save their community from the associated health risks. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. There was nothing Nate would not do for family. Nate was a friend to all who were friendly and a foe to all, as he would say, apprehended him, his community, family or friends. His foes were often afraid.
Nate was my friend, and companion. Along with Rev. Avery C. Alexander and others, Nate, who some called Mr. Parker, he helped build a Movement to save Press Park from the hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface. Nate's heroic efforts helped close Moton School, helped bring the EPA to reconsider making Press Park a superfund site, and made the EPA propose a $29 million buy out of Press Park homes. When the City of New Orleans turned down the EPA proposal Nate kept organizing the lawsuit. When the named plaintiffs won their case, Mr. Parker kept organizing to get all residents paid.
During the 1990s I entrusted my children and others who organized a city-wide recycling program to Mr. Parker. He was their driver, bodyguard, and my confidant. He kept a watchful and protective eye on them, and often reported to their dismay what they were doing. Nate often sat at my kitchen table and would talk for hours to all who listened. Nate's life was dedicated to search and spread truth to achieve righteousness and justice. And he could spread the truth.
Long live the spirit of Nathan Parker as a beacon light for the generations.
Justice and Beyond is a coalition of community, business, religious, labor and youth leaders who are dedicated to the constant struggle for righteousness and justice. Two years ago Justice and Beyond began with a state-wide fight to get the Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court position to Justice Bernette Johnson. When Justice Johnson won the seat, Justice and Beyond kept organizing and remains to this day a coalition where New Orleans leaders gather weekly to decide approaches to improve our community. Nate was involved in J&B until his health failed.

He was here though not to stay A restless soul,he went away The peace within him could not be found until he left this earthly ground. The angels came to guide his way and led him to a resting place. They gently laid him within God's grace. Now there's peacefulness all around. And those who love him truly know He has found a place to rest abound with peace, love and happiness.
