Russell Cresson Obituary

Russell Gerard Cresson, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home on Sunday, April 23, 2017 after an extended illness. Devoted and beloved husband for 66 years of Claire Montelepre Cresson, whom he affectionately referred to as "Prec," short for "precious." Together they had 9 children: Russell G. Cresson, Jr. (deceased), Kathleen Cresson, Guy G. Cresson, DDS (Pam), Gregory J. Cresson, M.D. (deceased), Diane Schwing (Adrian), Mary Kay Enger (Dan), Jeanne Ineich (Joe), John E. Cresson (Cathe), and Russell J. Cresson, DDS (Denean); 22 grandchildren: Jeffrey Cresson; Erica Cross; Danny, Rusty, Michael, Chris, and Mary Enger; Gregory, Mary Claire, Michael, and Patrick Schwing; Claire Abide, Paul and Danny Ineich; John, Caroline, Joseph, and Jacob Cresson; Guy and Elise Cresson; Rusty and Julia Cresson; and 5 great-grandchildren: Andrew Cross; Olivia, Gregory, and Emma Cresson; and McKenzie Abide. Russ was predeceased in death by his parents Leila Flynn and John Raymond Cresson, and his siblings Doris Bernard and Raymond and William Cresson. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews. Russ served his country during World War II in the Pacific with the U. S. Navy, and was commissioned as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a graduate of Warren Easton High School and Loyola University and was a baseball letterman. He sincerely loved Loyola University and the Jesuits serving as the school's long-time photographer for over 40 years. The feelings were reciprocated when Loyola awarded him its Co-Adjutor Optimus Award as a Distinguished Employee in 1983, its Adjutor Honorum Award as its alumnus of the year in 2004, and the St. Sebastian Award in 2007, awarded to an athlete who exhibits outstanding charitable, community, civic, and spiritual service to humanity. When he resided in Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, he served as principal of the CCD high school, lector, pastoral council member, and ran the stewardship campaign. He was a longtime co-captain at the Manresa House of Retreats. Russ was an everyday philosopher, a wise and honorable man, who loved to talk and share stories with all he encountered. He is lovingly remembered by the thousands of couples whose wedding photos he shot throughout the years, the many students he met while working at Loyola, and the Jesuits. Russ touched the lives of many and will be missed by all. Friends and family are invited to the visitation on Friday, April 28 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will begin at 12:00 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Avenue followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Loyola University in Russell Cresson's name or to the Sister Servants of Mary, 5001 Perlita Street, New Orleans, LA 70122. The family would especially like to thank Russ' compassionate caregivers: The Sister Servants of Mary, Phyllis Schleismann, Irma Harris, and Lawrence Caillouet.

Russ was one of the finest, nicest people that I had the opportunity to get to know in my years at Loyola. It was always a treat to interact with him during the many campus events he covered.
Russ had a truly wonderful family. It was a pleasure to have Jeanne and John as students in my classes. My wife and I have great memories of our trips to NYC with Jeanne and other students in the early 80's.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful family.

Dear Claire, Kathleen, Guy, Diane, Mary Kay, Jeanne & Rusty,

We are so sorry for your loss, and are keeping you all in our daily thoughts and prayers.

As Cousins (thru Claire), our families have been closely related for so many years. We witnessed your family as each of your children grew up and matured into wonderful Christian adults. Claire, you and Russ have lovingly and patiently worked together to achieve a wonderful legacy, which are your children and grandchildren.

We often mentioned to Russ just how much we enjoyed, and appreciated, the annual family Christmas photos...it was truly amazing to see how much each child had grown, and matured,
from year to year!!

Whenever Larry and Russ would get together, they would share memories of their days in the Navy, during WWII. They both seemed to enjoy reminiscing about those times, and were so proud to have served their country.

We would like to offer a special thanks to Guy and Diane, who have always been so helpful to our family in times of need.

Our sincere love to each one of you,

Cousins Cora, Larry, and Scott Pavur

To the Cresson Family, Russell and his Mother were particularly nice to me in 1942 when I visited his Mother and let her know that I went to Sacred Heart of Jesus school and was given his name to pray for and make Spiritual Bouquets in his name so he could come back home safe. He even sent me pictures when he was on a ship, and enclosed short notes of thanks in his Mother's letters. I even had the privilege of meeting him when he came back home. My daughter went to Holy Angels with his daughter. I'm 85 now and will continue to pray for his family. Joan Gabriel, Slidell, La.

Kathleen, my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the death of your dear Father. As a child I loved your parents and thought of them as such good and wonderful people. I was glad to read the obituary and learn of the many good things he did in his life. The thing I remember about him the most is coming to your house and seeing all of the big photos on the walls, that your dad had taken of each of the children. I thought that was so neat! He was such a smart man. Getting a degree back then at Loyola was not very common. And then reading all the initials behind your siblings names and you being a lawyer, I can see you all inherited his brilliancy. Also I didn't realize that you had siblings that have passed away. So sorry! Your mom and dad were courageous, holy people! My prayers are with all of you. Living to the age of 96 is amazing. I am glad you had him for so long. I know you all learned so much about life from him. God be with all of your family today & in the coming months ahead. Love and prayers, Ruth Calamari Binder
