Sidney Degan Obituary

DEGAN Sidney Wallis Degan, Jr, age 86, on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana. Beloved husband of the late Marion Danove Degan, and son of the late Sidney W. Degan and Pauline Thomann Degan. He is survived by three loving children, Sidney, III (wife, Nancy), Joanne Joyce, and Dennis Danove Degan, and grandchildren, Alison Degan Tem (husband, Michael) and Emily Danove Degan. He is also survived by sisters, Catherine Degan Chrestia, Emelia Degan Fourmigue, and his best friend, Kristy Flucke Cherry. He was predeceased by brother, John T. Degan. "Gramps" loved the company of family, friends and neighbors, who visited often during this past year, as he grew weaker from complications associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The family greatly appreciates the many kindnesses shown by all, especially his wonderful caretakers, Carrie Lewis, Sheila Heard and Yolanda Patterson. Gramps never met a stranger, and will be missed by many. He was a decorated veteran, having served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, and he worked for many years at Ford Motor Company and Caterpillar, Inc. Friends and family are invited to visit at Schoen's Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, from 10 am until 12:00 on Tuesday, November 1. A funeral mass in celebration of his life and aptly, the feast of All Saints, will commence at noon. A private burial will be held on Wednesday, November 2. Donations to the National World War II Museum, preferred, in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be expressed online at www.schoencanalstreet.com.

I have such nice memories of Uncle Sidney both with my grandmother, Anna D'Amico, and my own. He was the designated driver for my grandmother and his sisters. They had many adventures! I also think of him everyday as I pass the framed wedding invitation that he gave us as a gift when we married 10 years ago. It was such a thoughtful gift. I will remember Uncle Sidney fondly.

Dennis & Family,
I was so sorry to learn of the passing of your father and that I had missed the service. Mr. Sydney was one of our favorite customers at Landry's Restaurant. And remained one of mine at II Tony's. I will always remember him with a smile on his face. He will truly be missed. You all are in my prayers.

My heart is so heavy on the lost of Sidney
because even though I am so far away from
the family my love is always with each and everyone of you.
Just this morning at church we were asked to put all those we wanted to remember at mass tomorrow so I put down the Degan Family, the Formigue Family and the
Chrestia Family ..... my heart was just broken to open the obituries and find we all had lost a great person in Sidney.
My love and prayers are with you as always.

Sidney Degan lovingly cared for his ill wife for many years and that same blessing was bestowed upon him when he became ill. His was cared for in his home by his three wonderful children and 3 caring sitters. In spite of his failing health his home was always filled with love and laughter. He looked forward to and enjoyed the company of many family members and friends who came frequently to visit. I know that losing him will be difficult for all but the memories and love that he shared with his family and friends will live in their hearts forever. With deepest sympathy
