Stewart Collenberg Obituary

COLLENBERG Stewart Neale Collenberg, Jr., 66, known to all as Skip, died Monday of an apparent heart attack while doing his life's work, trimming a tree for a friend. Skip was a force of nature, a Southern gentleman to the core, with an engaging personality, a way with words, a true silver-tongue devil with a twinkle in the most beautiful blue eyes who charmed all he met. He was full of life and joy, quick to smile and always had a story to share. A native New Orleanian, he grew up on the banks of the Mississippi at Derbigny Plantation and Uptown. He attended Newman School, was a graduate of Tulane University and a member of the Band of Brothers, Delta Kappa Epsilon. While serving in the US Air Force in air crash rescue, he developed his lifelong fascination with fire engines to the point that later in life he came home from an auction with a 1955 Mack fire truck which soon became a party wagon and parade fixture. Skip loved the outdoors thus his career as an arborist, landscape contractor, nurseryman and the proprietor of A Cut Above Tree Service and Down to Earth Nursery. Among his many clients were Tulane University, the City of New Orleans, the McIlhenny family, Lakewood and New Orleans Country Clubs, and Stewart Enterprises, particularly Metairie Cemetery. Skip was among the first people back in the city after Katrina to help reopen the cemetery to bury the dead. It will now be his final resting place. Among his passions were the River Road plantations, antiques, particularly old tools and Audubon prints, live oak trees, tennis, dancing and sailing. He started his beloved daughter Lee in tennis at an early age with the help of his instructor, Nehemiah Atkinson. He was a member of the Chamale Senior Men's Tennis Club that won the Louisiana state championship on several occasions. He learned to dance at Miggie's and always cut quite a figure on the dance floor. Skip learned to sail while spending summers in Squirrel Island, Maine, and honed that skill on the Gulf Coast. He was a member of the Bay Waveland Yacht Club. His parents were Stewart Collenberg, Sr., and Sandra Rydstrom. His stories continue as he is survived by the love of his life and companion of 30 years, his wife Anita Warner, his beloved daughter, Lee, sister Margi Levy and his twin Susie Matthews, his step mother, Elaine Collenberg, godchild, Abbegayle Morrow, six step siblings, and countless friends. Visitation and services will be at Trinity Episcopal Church in NOLA on Friday, June 24. Visitation will be at 10 in the Board Room in the undercroft and the memorial service will be at 11 in the Chapel. There will be a reception in the Parish House following the service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Skip Collenberg Memorial Tree Fund, c/o Robert Beckman, Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124. We will gather in the Rigolets on the shrimp boat Captain Pooh Bear II at 7pm to celebrate Skip's life and love of the water. Join us. June 25, 2011

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Anita,
Robert and I were so saddened to hear of Skip's passing. We often talk about Skip, and how kind he was to stop by our office just to talk to Rob's dad, Richard. It always made Richard's day. We were so appreciative when Skip found the time to console us at Richard's funeral. Skip always held a special place in our hearts. He will be fondly remembered. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Anita:
I was so sorry to read this morning that Skip has passed away. My sincerest condolences for your loss. He was such a generous, thoughtful person. I will never forget his concern with me and my trees immediately after Hurricane Katrina when he had far more important things to deal with. His enthusiasm for the task of helping me revealed that his work was much more than a job. It was a life's work that he loved. Take care and with much affection.
