Martin Barnes Obituary

BARNES
Former Mayor Martin G. "Marty" was born and raised in the Riverside Projects in the City of Paterson, NJ. Mayor Barnes departed this life on Friday, December 28, 2012.
Mayor Barnes graduated from PS 21 and Eastside High School and went on to graduate from Seton Hall University with a degree in Educational Psychology.
His career began in sales and marketing for various large corporations as he dabbled in Tenant's Rights Organization and became an officer in The National Tenants Organization (NTO). His obsession with human rights began his first foray into politics. As an eighteen year old, Marty ran for Alderman under Paterson's old form of government and lost by one vote. This experience with the political system let him know that the only way to get justice and equal rights was through the political realm. With this acquired know how Marty became the Councilman from the 4th Ward, Councilman-at-Large and Councilman from the 3rd Ward before becoming the Mayor of The City of Paterson.
Mayor Barnes was the only Mayor to run unopposed in the history of the City of Paterson and the first African-American Mayor. In his honor there was the Marty Barnes Civic Association and the Marty Barnes Athletic Club.
He is survived by his wife Diane Barnes, sons, Gregory and Marcus Barnes, daughter, Antoinette Barnes, brothers, Tyrone and Ronald Barnes, five grandchildren, daughter-in-law Catherine Barnes, one aunt, Virginia Russell, three nieces, two nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Mayor Barnes was a master teacher. He had the ability to inspire and motivate people. Uplift and identify with all he encountered. He a group of us the importance of getting involved with government. He said "government effects everything you do.... It effects how much money you pay for a roll of tissue". lol Another charismatic saying of his was when he would speak of unification to a mixed group he would say " We may have all came here on different cars, planes and ships, but we are all on the same boat". I love that dude. Rest In Paradise Mayor Barnes.
