Gordon Staples Obituary

Gordon Lee Staples, 90, of Blacksburg, VA formerly of Upperville, VA, died Monday, July 21, 2014 at his residence. He was well known in the community and loved by all who knew him. Many remember him for his keen sense of humor and eagerness to help others.

Mr. Staples was born August 22, 1923 in Upperville, VA, the son of the late Howard W. Staples and Lula May Carver Staples.

Gordon was a rural postal carrier with the United States Postal Service for 53 years and loved his job, always saying it was a pleasure to be able to get to know the community that he served.

As an Airman in the U. S. Air Force during World War II, he was a Radio Operator and Gunner on the B-24 Liberator. He had a fascination for airplanes and thoroughly enjoyed his service for his country.

He was a member of the Upperville United Methodist Church and one of the original members of the Upperville Volunteer Fire Department. He also managed Buchanan Hall in Upperville for many years.

He was married to Dorothy Mae Clevenger Staples who passed away January 1, 1991. He later married his devoted and loving wife, Donna P. Staples, on October 2, 2002 in Winchester, VA.

Surviving with his wife are a step-daughter, Linda Ralston and her husband, Bill, of Blacksburg, VA; a step-son, Larry Loughborough and his wife, Vicki, of Warrenton, VA; two great nephews, Donald Paul Staples of Richmond, VA and Howard Carlton Staples of Trinity, NC; and a great niece, Kimberly Staples Hundley of Winston-Salem, NC. Also a niece, Sue Ellen Clevenger- Biswell, her husband Dave of Chapel Hill, NC and Gordon's extended family.

His brothers, Carlton Staples, Allen Staples and a step-son, Richard "Rick" Wayne Loughborough, all preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 P. M. with a funeral service being held at 2:00 P. M. Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Upperville United Methodist Church, Upperville, with Rev. Robert Schoeman and Rev. William Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors. Following the Burial, the family invites everyone to join them for dinner at the Upperville Firehouse.

Memorial contributions may be made to Upperville United Methodist Church, 1134 Delaplane Grade Rd., Upperville, VA 20185.
