John O. "Joh" Hahn

John Hahn Obituary

Joh Hahn sought excellence in everything he did. He was a loving husband, a loyal family man, and a devoted friend. He was an accomplished Engineer with a degree from Virginia Tech and one of the few in the world to hold a certification as a senior Welding Inspector. He was Vice President of a successful fabrication company, a commercial pilot with multi-engine land instrument rating, and an advocate for youth in aviation. He was many things to many people, and perhaps that is his greatest legacy: the wide reach of his inspiration to others.

He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, and never lost his passion for the place of his birth. On beautiful days, he could be found riding his tractor along the planted fields behind his house, and in bad weather, helping his neighbors plow snow out of their driveways. He was dedicated to Fabritek Company, where he served as Vice-President, bringing vital opportunities to the company as a result of his vast skills, high standards, and commitment to quality and hard work. He took to the skies at every opportunity, flying across country with his loving wife, Cynthia, and recently began to learn aerial acrobatics. In fact, he tapped into his abilities as a pilot to help others, saving lives as he flew one friend to have important medical tests, another to receive a kidney transplant, and a third to have surgery. These are just a few examples of what was always Joh's first instinct: to jump in and lend a hand.

He was a true adventurer who loved to laugh and work with his hands, who aimed to fly and see the world, and who lived for his wife, family and friends. He was 55 years old when he passed away, but the abundance of people who loved him will always be able to look to the sky and feel his presence.

Joh is survived by his wife Cynthia Fraula-Hahn, mother Peggy Owen Hahn, brother Robert H. Hahn, Jr., sister Stephanie Ruth Vaughan, all of Winchester, VA, as well as daughter Lauren Rebecca Hahn and grand-daughter Phoenix Rivae Brown of Charleston, SC. Joh will be deeply missed by in-laws, Sharon (Sherry) Fraula-Tuegel of Towson, MD, Gail Jenkins Hahn; Ward P. Vaughn; nephews Matthew Jenkins Hahn, Robert Alexander Vaughan, and nieces Mary Helen Hahn, Carol Owen Vaughan, and Eva Virginia Vaughan. Joh is also survived by great-uncle William Hahn of Monterrey, VA, and great-aunts Armenia Owen, Sara Hahn Franklin, and Rebecca Hahn, all of Roanoke, VA, cousins Harry Pressley, Jr. and his wife Patsy, of Coral Springs, FL, William Hahn and Jeffrey Hahn of Richmond, VA, John Owen of Las Vegas, NV, Rebecca Owen of Mount Dora, FL, and Bobby Owen of Orlando, FL. Joh will be missed by his extended family and many friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 at Braddock Street United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be held at Braddock Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Red Cross, 561 Fortress Drive, Winchester, VA 22603, or C-CAP 2011 Valley Avenue, Winchester, Virginia, 22601 or another charity of your choice.

I am so saddened to hear of this loss. He will always be Johie to me. My memories of childhood have always included Johie - from those early days of first grade when he ran away from school all the way home, to our childhood visits across the fields to each other's home. Though we lost touch following high school (except for a brief happy reunion 6 years ago with Johie and his lovely wife Cindy), I remember Johie as a sensitive and caring individual. So, I am not at all surprised to read of his dedication and charitable acts. He wrote in my senior yearbook "I hope you will never forget me" - I won't. My heart goes out to his family - I hope you find peace in knowing the lives that he touched and the print he left on this earth.

Joe was a great guy and friend. He had such pride and dedication for his business. But his flying was his passion. He worked hard, but he would somehow find time to head to the airport during lunch, or after work, to get a little flight time in. He always wanted to learn more, whether it was for flying or to benefit his business. Joe will be greatly missed. God bless the family.

Joh lived his life well and full. We should all be so fortunate at the end of our life to leave a legacy like this. I have not seen him since high school but even so I feel saddened by his passing.
