Phyllis Ann Morefield

1940 - 2025

Phyllis Ann Doerflein Morefield, 84, of Edinburg, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Life Care Center in New Market. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 2:00pm at Cedarwood Cemetery in Edinburg. Brother Robert Cline will officiate. A Celebration of Life will follow at Conicville Fire Department.

Mrs. Morefield was born October 24, 1940, in Ironton, Ohio, daughter of the late Edmond and Leola Rayburn Doerflein. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and a member of the Woodstock Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She received a bachelor's degree in history from Radford University and was a teacher for Shenandoah County Public Schools and taught at Aylor Middle School. Phyllis was a lifelong genealogist. She had a love for family history. In her later years she embraced DNA research and helped many people find their long-lost relatives. She was a founding member of the Melungeon Heritage Association and past board member.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Edmond Doerflein II and daughter-in-law, Maria Morefield.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Morefield, Sr. whom she married on June 7, 1962; children, James Morefield, Jr. of Gore, VA, Eric Morefield (Caroline) of Brussels, Belgium, Julie Miller (Adam) of Edinburg, and Dawn Crawford (Daniel) of Strasburg; sisters, Carol Hoyos (Sal) and Debbie Aubrey (Greg); grandchildren, Megan VanBuren (Michael), Connor Morefield, Brian Morefield (Maya), Andrew Morefield (Kayla Andrews), Sierra Miller (Noah Myers), and Grace Miller; and great-grandchildren, Elowyn VanBuren and Morgan Myers.

Pallbearers will be Connor Morefield, Brian Morefield, Andrew Morefield, Noah Myers, Jay Sibert, and Adam Miller.
