Michael J. Ahern, age 81, passed away on December 13, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born in 1941 to Daniel and Catherine Ahern. He spent his growing up years in Chicago's far west side. He attended St. Ignatius High School and University of Illinois. He grew up surrounded by his loving family which included his sisters, Joan, Kathleen and Noreen, and many loving relatives all hailing from County Kerry, Ireland. As a young man, he became an electrician working in the industry with Divane Bros. Electric. He soon elevated himself to not only being an outstanding electrician but an outstanding executive as well, which allowed him to establish his own company, Homestead Electric, in 1981. This company became a premier electrical contractor in Chicago and surrounding collar counties. He married the late Kathleen (nee Hernacki) in 1970 and became a father to David Ahern, Lisa Thielsen, and Katie Daughton, who after working under their father's tutelage, are now the principals of this thriving company. Mike was extremely hard working and business smart, as is evidenced by Homestead Electric's many awards and successes. He was loved and respected by many. He embodied the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity in business and in everyday life. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing tennis and loved to spend quality time with his family and friends.
Mike is survived by his children, David (Maria), Lisa and Katie (Phil), Michael, Mary Jo (Dave), Carrie and Daniel (Jennifer), grandchildren, Sarah, Shannon, Maegan, Samantha, Yarett and Airalih, Olivia, RJ and Andrew, Jack, Kelsey and Preston, and Duke and Jake, as well as his sister, Noreen and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen, parents, Daniel and Catherine, sisters, Joan and Kathleen, and grandson Christopher. He leaves behind a legacy to be incredibly proud of and he will be sorely missed by his family, close friends, and colleagues.
A visitation will be held Monday, December 19, 2022, at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry from 4:00-8:00pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry on Tuesday, December 20, at 11:00am. Interment All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines. For more information, please call 815-385-0063.
