Jeffery Fitzgerald Obituary

Jeffery "Jeff" D. Fitzgerald, age 65, of Hobart, passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2025, after a courageous and long battle with Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy Type 2.
Jeff was born on August 8, 1960, in Valparaiso, IN, to the late H. Jerry Fitzgerald and Beverly (Ramasay) Fitzgerald. He graduated from Portage High School in 1978, where he was the head photographer for the yearbook and developed a lifelong passion for photography. He continued to pursue his love for photography throughout his life.
Jeff was a dedicated electrician at Gary Steel Products/AtcoGary Metal for 34 years, where he made lifelong friends among his coworkers. He was a passionate sports fan, often inviting friends over to watch Chicago Blackhawks or Cubs games, enjoy a craft beer that he brewed himself, or play a competitive game of darts. Jeff cherished the memories of his days coaching Hobart Girls Softball and playing hockey. He could often be found debating with friends about the best Rock 'n' Roll band.
Known for his infectious sense of humor, Jeff loved to share a joke and bring laughter to those around him. His love for Rock 'n' Roll music was only matched by his warm heart and ability to make people feel like family.
Jeff met the love of his life, Jackie (Boetcher), in 1983 through mutual friends, and they shared a loving marriage for 41 years.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jackie of Hobart; his mother, Beverly Fitzgerald of Portage; his daughter, Ashley (Jack) France; two sisters-in-law, Nikki Fitzgerald of Portage and Carol Fitzgerald of Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Hubert "Jerry" Fitzgerald, and two brothers, Jerry Fitzgerald and Jim Fitzgerald.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the family to assist with final arrangements.
Visitation is Tuesday, December 30, 2025 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart. Funeral services are Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel with Rev. Scott Mauch and Chaplain Chris Williams officiating. Cremation will follow. Jeff "Dutch" was a funny and wise man. He was always up for a joke or passing back and forth on quotes from the movie "The Blues Brothers". He would discuss his latest brew that he was working on at home and it was a joy to hang out with him in the "Dart Emporium". We started out as co-workers and became friends soon after. The world is down one great man. Yet, he is in Heaven on God's hockey team!
