Margaret Davies Obituary

Margaret Rennoe Davies

December 8, 1927 - November 24, 2024

Margaret Ann Davies, born December 8, 1927, to Edgar and Gertrude Rennoe of Indianapolis, Indiana. Her brother, Jack Rennoe, DO, (1926-2023), predeceased her. She attended Butler University where she joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority, played field hockey and tennis, and received her bachelor's degree as a dietician. Margaret Ann passed away November 24 at home, surrounded by family. She was 96.

After graduation, Margaret Ann worked in Pittsburgh, PA where she met fellow Sunday school teacher, Caleb Davies (1925-2005). Their courtship involved going for long drives through the countryside, followed by ice cream. They were married in 1952, settling in Hammond, IN, where, among other community-centered activities, Margaret Ann and Caleb became founding members of Woodmar United Methodist Church. They had three children: Caleb (Cheryl), David, and Sarah. Later they welcomed spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren into the family. Margaret Ann is survived by her children, six grandchildren (Evan, Patrick, Ethan, Elizabeth, Ben, and Caleb) and two great grandchildren (Isaac and Eliza).

Margaret Ann's life revolved around raising a family and civic engagement.

She taught Sunday school, went to her children's sporting events, concerts, and plays, and was supportive of them in innumerable ways. She was deeply involved with Camp Fire Girls to support her daughter and to give young girls an opportunity to make friends, explore nature and the world, and become self-reliant.

She was active in AAUW and the League of Women Voters. For years she filled her tables with membership brochures, artist selection offerings, and back-office tasks for Community Concerts, reflecting her love of music. Like her mother, she was a P.E.O. stalwart for many years, enjoying the social aspect of getting together with other women and working to give young women an opportunity for independence and accomplishment through higher education. She supported Butler University by serving as a trustee.

She cherished traveling with her children and grandchildren to familiar and new places around the country and overseas.

The family is indebted to her superb caregivers for their empathy, dedication, patience, and love which enabled her to lead a quality later life.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Avenue, Munster, IN on Wednesday, December 18 at 3 p.m. Donations may be made to Butler University and P.E.O. International.

Miss Davis, as I know her, was an extremely distinguished person of character and presentation. Always concerned for the under represented but valued. Striving to ensure we all have a voice in the journey for purpose.
