ARNOLD RHEINGOLD Obituary

RHEINGOLD--Arnold, a distinguished emeritus professor of Chemistry at UC San Diego who made significant contributions to inorganic chemistry and X-ray crystallography, died on March 3, 2024, after a long illness. He was 83. Rheingold, whose passion for chemistry was ignited as a young teenager when he was gifted a chemistry set, was born in Chicago in 1940 to Dr Joseph C. Rheingold, a psychiatrist, and Dr Harriet L. Rheingold, a research psychologist. He grew up in Rockford, IL, and his dedication to the field led him to graduate from Case Western Reserve in 1962 and earn a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1969. After a short time at the Glidden Paint Company, Rheingold joined the research faculty at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1970, where he stayed until 1980. Later academic appointments included Visiting Professor, SUNY-Buffalo, 1980; Professor, University of Delaware, 1982; Professor University of California, San Diego, 2003; and Emeritus Professor, UC San Diego, 2017. Dr. Rheingold's career, spanning over six decades, was marked by major contributions to understanding organometallic compounds via X-ray crystallography. His pioneering approach of service X-ray crystallography in chemistry departments will be a lasting testament to his impact. His publications, cited over 95,000 times, make him the highest contributor to articles across all journals of the American Chemical Society; the second-highest contributor to the ACS journal Inorganic Chemistry; and the all-time highest contributor to the Cambridge Structural Database with over 7500 structures. Rheingold was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992 and was Chair of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society in 2003. Rheingold was awarded a Fellowship in 2011 and, in 2012, the society's highest honor, the Award for Distinguished Service to the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry. Dr. Rheingold was predeceased by his wife, Janice Helen Faber Rheingold, an executive director of social service non-profit organizations. He is survived by his partner, Nancy Trowbridge of Carlsbad, CA, a child- family psychotherapist; his brother, Paul Rheingold of Rye, NY; two daughters, Dr. Margaret Westbury of the Isle of Man and Dr. Alison Rheingold of Amherst, MA; and four grandsons, Robert, Alexander, Jacob, and William.
