Carl and I were friends at SUNY Albany over 50 years ago. He was warm, funny and a wonderful listener. There were very few Jewish grad students, so we had a lotbin common. I once had a real problem and Carl was there to provide a sympathetic ear. I'm thrilled to learn that he was so successful on his endeavors. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My deepest sympathy to the Rheins family. He was my professor at Adelphi U. In a holocaust studies class. He was a wonderful teacher and was a mesmerizing storyteller.

Dear Brenda,
Jimmy told me about Carl's death and I want to convey my condolences to you and your family. You and I were truly blessed to have had such amazing, caring, supportive husbands and the memory of the life we had with them will help us overcome the grief of losing them.
My thoughts will be with you as you experience a Pesach like you -- and all of us -- have never experienced before. But we know that not only the mourning, but also the fear of this grave illness, will soon be gone. Yes, gam zo ya'avor, gam zo ya'avor.
Shabbat Shalom.
With love,
Helene

Dear Brenda, Jason, and Jaclyn,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your dear husband and father Carl. He was a good friend, a distinguished scholar, a devoted Jew, and just a mensch. I can recall how hard he worked on bringing Elie Wiesel to speak at Stony Brook when he worked for the Provost and how he often represented the interests of the Jewish community from his pivotal place in the University Administration. Carl also played an important leadership role on the Hillel board of directors dating to his close relationship with Richie Siegel and Alan Flam as well as so many Jewish student leaders. The Stony Brook alumni network is buzzing with this sad news as more people who knew Carl from those days learn of this. We last saw one another at the shiva for Peter Kahn z"l, one of many faculty with whom Carl had a close relationship. We were also honored when he came back to campus to speak at our screening of the film Above and Beyond and added great depth of knowledge about the archival research that went into producing this important story. Carl was always teaching and always reminding us of the vital role of history. He was a historian to his core. Yehi zichrono livracha. Rabbi Joe Topek

Dear Brenda and Family. I saw your words in the Times. I fondly recall that Carl taught for me in the Suffolk Hebrew High School program for 11 shuls. He "wild" hair made it difficult for a kipah to rest! As a scholar and teacher he was par excellence. His knowledge made him at the top of his profession. And I remember YOUR work with the Jewish community as we tried so hard to give content and substance to Suffolk Jewry. My sincerest condolences to all of you. Jewry is the poorer for Carl's death. I don't know why but I just thought of Carl today for the first time in years. He was an academic adviser to me at Stony Brook University back in the early 1970s and I'm afraid I let that relationship lapse. When I thought of him I looked for his LinkedIn profile and sent an invitation to connect. Then I Googled his name and found his NY Times obituary for today. I can't express my feelings -- and why or how did I think of him today. He was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend to a young student and I'm so sorry that he has passed. I send my profound condolences and best wishes to his family. Ha'makom yenahem etkhem betokh she'ar avelei Tziyonvi'Yerushalayim. Mark
