CATHRYN ARCOMANO Obituary

ARCOMANO--Cathryn Buckley, beloved wife of Nicholas, died on June 27. Cathryn was an International artist who lived and worked in Manhattan. She had solo exhibitions in the United States, England, Italy, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Hong Kong. Her paintings were acquired by museums and corporations, including the Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum, Everson Museum, Gannett Co., Nordstrom, Pfizer, and the Skadden Arps Law Firm. She is represented by the Adamson Gallery in Washington, D.C. She was born in Troy, New York on November 20, 1923, daughter of Catherine Looby and Timothy J. Buckley. Shortly thereafter, her parents moved to the Buckley Ancestral Home Altmar, New York. She was a 1946 graduate of the college of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. Her yearbook described her as "pensive, dreamy...an artist's artist...clever, poetic Cathy". In 1945, she lived in Mexico City and studied art at the University of Mexico. On October 7, 1961, she married Nicholas Arcomano, a New York copyright attorney, at The Lady Chapel in St. Patrick's Cathedral. They celebrated their 50th anniversary at the cathedral last year. After her marriage, she attended the New School in New York City and was awarded the first prize for painting in 1974. In 2010, she and her husband established the Cathryn Buckley Arcomano Lectureship Series in contemporary art at the College of Saint Rose. Sister Wendy Beckett, art critic, and contemplative nun, described Cathryn's work as "strong and delicate...mysterious and subtle...and beautiful" and to those who knew her, it describes Cathryn. A review in "Der Bund" in 2000 praised the "silent magic" of her paintings. A private funeral mass and burial took place on July 3 in Gloversville, New York. Donations in Cathryn's memory may be made to The Breadline for the Poor, The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, 135 West 31st, New York, NY 10001, or The Cathryn B. Arcomano Lectureship, The College of Saint Rose, 432 Western Ave., Albany, NY 12203.
