Beloved Dr Kleinberg may have saved my life. Three doctors before him had seen me and dismissed my symptoms. When he saw me, one look, a quick visit and he ordered a biopsy. When he was told 3 months, he wouldn´t accept that saying, "this is urgent, see what you can do for this week" in the calmest voice not to scare me. It was thyroid cancer-the kind people say isn´t really even a cancer (maybe if you don´t get it). But he referred me to MSKCC and after a total thyroidectomy, learning it had passed through lymph nodes, radiation treatments, decades later of never living a day without a pill or the after-effects of that radiation on your teeth, bones etc. I am still SO profoundly grateful to Dr Kleinberg for his care and brilliance in diagnosing me so expertly that I looked him up to thank him again all these years later. Instead, I am so saddened to learn of his passing. I know his loved ones know how special he is; and his colleagues know how special he is; but I had to write a word to those that as one of the patients whose life was saved by him, he is beyond special. Thank you so much, Dr Kleinberg!

David, dear colleague and friend, I miss you in all things we joined together: Pituitary science, opera, good restaurants and nice places. I can only say a unique word in Portuguese, roughly comparable to longing: “SAUDADES”!

David, New York and its Metropolitan Opera House and restaurants have become less attractive without your presence. Also the Pituitary meetings lack your experience, engagement and also your unforgettable laugh.

I was a patient of his since 1985. l last saw him last year and was scheduled to see him again last year but missed that appointment. I was planning to contact Erin to schedule a new appointment but received this notification of his passing. I am truly saddened. I owe him a lot. He has normalised my condition and for that I am eternally grateful. I miss you Dr. kleinberg.

David was a dear friend and colleague. We share together great moments, attending medical meetings, opera performances and good restaurants. He was a vibrant man, an outstanding endocrinologist, and someone who knew how to enjoy life. All medical community, especially his dear Pituitary Society members, will miss Davids presence.

I am deeply saddened to learn of David's passing. I have known him since 1976 when I was a resident and he encouraged me to pursue a career in endocrinology. David was a global giant in the field of Neuroendocrinology. His ongoing contributions to the field, his erudition, his bonhomie, and his sense of humor will be sorely missed.

It's hard to fathom that over 30 years have passed and not seeing David in our lobby ever again causes a pit in our abdomens. David was our friend who asked nothing of us then to have a good time. He loved life and it is hard to believe he is now gone. We will miss our dinners with him, his laugh and remarkable stories. It is our hope and belief that where ever you are your joy of life will always make an impact to us as to how we view the world. Elaine and Alfred Fields
