David Marks Obituary

MARKS--David V. P., 54, of Manhattan, passed away on July 8, 2009. Beloved son of the late Margaret and John Marks, he was the cherished brother of Michael Marks and the late Laura Marks, the brother-in-law of Jill Darrow, and the loving uncle of Katie and John Marks, whom he adored. David was privileged to attend The Dalton School; Harvard College, where he studied economics under Nobel laureates Kenneth Arrow and Wassily Leontief and graduated summa cum laude; Harvard Law School, where he received his J.D. degree, cum laude; and the Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, where he studied under Nobel laureate Thomas Schelling and received his A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in economics. David's scholarly publications include "Competition in the Investment Banking Industry" (Harvard University Press), co-authored with Harvard Business School Professors Samuel L. Hayes, III and A. Michael Spence, and "Signposting: The Selective Revelation of Product Information" (Harvard Business School Press), co-authored with Kennedy School of Government Professor Richard J. Zeckhauser. David was a member of the bar in Massachusetts and New York. David began his business career as President of The GMS Group, Inc., a strategic consulting firm that he formed with two Harvard Law School professors to furnish advice to firms in the financial services sector. Later, David was President of an independent music publishing company, St. Nicholas Music Inc., and was a private investor in intellectual property, securities, fine art and other assets. David's interests were numerous and varied. He studied and collected Renaissance and 19th century Renaissance revival decorative arts, arms and armor, and furnishings. He was a longtime student of the history of New York architecture, especially its residential architecture. He served on the boards of various preservation organizations including Carnegie Hill Neighbors, the Defenders of the Historic Upper East Side, and the Historic Neighborhood Enhancement Alliance. David was active in The Episcopal Chaplaincy at Harvard for 30 years, including serving as Finance Committee Member, Treasurer, Vice President and, most recently, President. David's quest for perfection in everything he did was an inspiration to all who knew him. He also encouraged and cultivated perfection in all of those around him, the end result of which was a litany of enduring friendships. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 13, at 11:30am at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue at 81st Street. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in David's memory to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue New York, NY 10065, www.mskcc.org.

I first met David in Kindergarten, when we attended P.S. 41 together. Decades later, when he passed, we were still the best of friends. We simply loved each other from the start. He was a brilliant conversationalist, a fellow cub scout, and a generous and attentive friend. I knew his mother, father, brother and sister -- and I am better for it. David was there when I needed a friend the most -- during my divorce. Looking back, I always enjoyed visiting his Greenwich Village home, both as a kid and later as an adult. Our friendship spanned our entire lives. I have vivid memories of him from all those decades, for he was, unbeknownst to me at the time, as much a brother to me as my own brother. He was brilliant, funny, egotistical, and generous. He was my son's godfather. I can't say enough how I miss him to this day. David was my rock in New York City, and there are many times I have felt adrift without him being reachable on the phone, or available for a quick dinner to catch up on things. He was always a good friend to my son, too. Though we miss him terribly, we take comfort in the memories he has left us. God Speed, David Marks!

I will always remember the last time David and I met in person at the Millennium Hilton near the site of the World Trade Center. We talked for about 3 hours before he had to leave because of the pains he was having from his cancer. We also shared numerous texts regarding my daughter's graduation from Stanford during his last days. I was very sad when the text messages stopped. Oddly, we were introduced to each other by his late sister, Laura, someone I had met many years
earlier while I was a visiting medical student at St. Vincent's. The Marks made a mark (excuse the pun) on me. My memories of them both carry great fondness and a bit of a sense of mystery.

Our last meeting at midnight at the Millennium was representative of how you conducted your life. The incredible courage and determination it took for you to even come, the precision with which you charted your medications, the affection that you communicated, even though our friendship did not span more than the years from Laura's last birthday party at the Village, your interest in the future of my daughter, who was about to graduate from Stanford in economics and Slavic studies, your stories of your girls' band and how they were "like daughters". It was sad to see you go that night, knowing I would not be seeing you again. You will always be in my thoughts.

Many thanks to those who cared for David these last months.

My condolences to Michael and family.

For us, David's enduring legacy is a friendship that has enriched our lives immeasurably. Through his extraordinary intelligence, his biting wit, and his following of passions without compromise, he made us happier, and better. We miss him more than we are able to put into words, and our hearts are with his family.

I was so sorry to hear about David. He was truly one of the nicest people I have ever known. I got a chance to know David through a mutual friend (Rudolph) and was amazed what a thoughtful, kind and dedicated person he was. He will be terribly missed. My thoughts are with you.

we are deeply saddened by David's untimely passing.
We are crying; alex recalls David's kindness at laura's memorial dinner. I miss my very very occasional yet lengthy telephone talks with David, post laura's passing, wherein David was kind, sweet, thoughtful....
Michael, katie, john, jill....our heart& prayers are sent warmly to you, hoping they help, knowing not much, but time, will mend your broken hearts, sadness....at losses of David, and laura before him....with warmth,
With kindness,
With love:
Gail, her son & laura and David's friend: alex, and g'ma lucille
