DEBORAH KARP Obituary

KARP--Deborah Burstein, age 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Rabbi Abraham J. Karp. She is survived by her two sons, Hillel (wife Arlene) and David (wife Barbara), by six grandchildren, Sarah (husband Eldad Malka), Beth, Ben, Joshua (wife Rona), Aaron (wife Carla), and Rachel, and by two great-grandchildren, Elan and Aviv Malka. Born and raised in New York, she attended Hunter College High School and Barnard College. She received MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University, the PhD when she was 65 years old. A woman of valor, she was an example for her family and those around her. She authored three books on Jewish history for grade school students, and collaborated with her husband on his many publications. Funeral services were held at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, Amsterdam and 91st Street, at 9:30am, Wednesday July 3, 2013. Shiva will be held from Wednesday to Tuesday, July 9, at 3333 Henry Hudson Parkway, Apartment 22E, Bronx, New York. Donations may be given to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 3080 Broadway, NYC, or the charity of your choice.
