GEORGE PAPPAS Obituary
died peacefully at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx at midday on Wednesday, August 12th at the age of eighty-eight. He had struggled with kidney failure and first onset diabetes. A lifelong pioneer in scientific research whose interests consistently traversed the fields of anatomy, cell biology, and neuroscience, George was known to his students as an expansive and vibrant lecturer - yet also to his closest colleagues, family, and friends - as an incomparable host and Mediterranean chef. Science, politics, and rogue humor animated his life and his inimitable approach to quotidian realities. Beyond the legacy of his intellectual accomplishments, he will be profoundly missed by those who loved him dearly.

George was a principled human being, a distinguished scientist and a fun loving friend. His outstanding contributions to science and in defense of social justice around the world were exemplary. His gourmet fish dinners were memorable. We admired and loved George and send heartfelt condolences to his family.

George's family was not limited to genetics and marriage. He fathered a large number of PhDs and post-docs and he cared dearly for all of them. As my doctoral advisor, he offered much humanistic as well as intellectual and technical support. I remain very grateful. --Alfredo
