GERALD BENJAMIN Obituary

BENJAMIN-- Dr. Gerald DDS, Extraordinaire, died on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. Gerald was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 4, 1948, the son of Lawrence H. Benjamin and Mildred (Tannenbaum) Benjamin. Gerald is survived by his wife Susan; his dear friend from childhood, Michael Nussbaum (Suzanne); his dear friends from the first day of dental school Daniel and Judith Leff; his brother and sister-in-law Gary and Debra Pietrzyk; nieces Allison Dankner and Emily Pietrzyk; and nephews Joshua and Mathew Pietrzyk. Dr. Benjamin grew up in Laurelton, NY and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1966. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a bachelor degree in History in 1970 and his DDS degree in 1977. He subsequently completed a Certificate of Proficiency in Esthetic Dentistry from SUNY Buffalo in 2001. Gerald was one of the few fortunate people who truly loved what he did. The motto in his dental office and life was "DO THE RIGHT THING!" He lived by this motto and often bemoaned the fact not enough other people did. In addition to his work, he loved a good political discussion, a good glass of red wine with friends, and a great charcuterie board at a nice restaurant. Gerald was proud of his contribution as the co-founder of the world's first Esthetic Center within a dental school at SUNY Buffalo in 1995. He was the first-place winner of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Smile Contest in San Antonio in 1999. He enjoyed mentoring younger dentists and was always willing to discuss techniques and offer assistance with difficult cases. Dr. Benjamin believed that you were not officially dead until your obit appeared in the New York Times. Rest easy now Gerald.

Dr. Gerald Benjamin is one & the only mentor, true Hero. Iam a practising Dentist from India, He liked my work, he saw my cases in dental forums and he invited me to visit his office to polish my skills , that's how our teacher and student bonding started in 2006. From there onwards what ever iam today, i owe that to him. Only his wife Susan can understand what kind of relationship I and Gerald had. No one can replace him to me as a mentor. Iam remembering you every day in my office boss. Thanks master for whatever you taught me in dentistry. For me you are always there.

I've gone to Dr. Benjamin about 40 years. The first time I sat in his chair, he gave me a hematoma :) I'm so glad I gave him a second chance...He was very kind. I was a young single mom and he gave me discounted dental work until he made my mouth feel good again. Then I got married and he would tease me and ask if I was pregnant again every time I saw him. We shared something in common. I had an accident and had drop foot like Dr. B. I was fortunate to have had a surgery that allows me to walk without a brace. We talked a lot about that and my experience was no where near what he experienced, but he was very empathetic. I never liked going to the dentist, but I always loved when he said I was in good shape! I will miss him and as I look for a new dentist, I know I won't be able to NOT compare him or her to our precious Dr. B. There will never be anyone like him that I will be able to have so much trust in.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. THE best dentist ever! First started seeing Dr. Benjamin in Cropseyville, NY when I was just a kid and followed him to Saratoga. I am so very sad to learn of his passing. Our family loved Dr. Benjamin. We will miss you always.

My condolences to Dr Benjamin´s family and office family. I am heartbroken to hear this. What an outstanding dentist and an even better man. He was the first dentist who actually helped me save my teeth and make my smile whole again. I wish I had met him sooner. I will miss our chats about life, and I´ll also miss the wonderful staff he surrounded himself with.

The world will miss you Dr. B. Condolences from myself, Paul, and our parents to Susan and his staff.

I once asked Dr Benjamin why he became a dentist- he told me, in short form, that he loved to see a good smile, and to make others feel good about themselves. He certainly did that for me, and clearly for a lot of other people. May his memory be a blessing.

Susan and Family,
As I learn the news of a friend's passing I am saddened. The many years since last we met have often been occupied with fond memories of our fledgling years together at Fosdick Masten. Benji, Fundy, Marie, Ron and I formed an unholy alliance as we struggled to find our ways in the classrooms of that venerable building at the corner of Buffalo's Michigan and East North Sts. It was a time of unrest both in the world and in our worlds. Viet Nam raged and the daily uncertainties of military service combined with our own lack of experience in the classroom made for some tenuous days. In retrospect, we made it through because we had a shared belief in our ability to make a difference in our students' lives and a willingness to entertain the vitality that these young women brought to our neophytic experience.
We learned to depend on each other whether it was chaperoning dances, fashion shows, field trips, basketball on Friday afternoons or much-needed gatherings at the Benjamin mansion on Grand Island.
Benji had his ready smile, an indomitable can-do spirit and an open heart to anyone who was in need. He was a hit with our all-female student body because they understood how much he truly cared.
I will forever hold closely those early days, treasure our shared growth and value the worth of a true friend.
Please know that I share in your sadness but am warmed by the rich memories that our relationship fostered.

My initial entry into this guestbook was way too short for someone of Dr. Benjamin's stature. Dr. Lillquist's recent entry is a better reflection of how I feel.
This is the first time in my life that I have come back to reread condolences. Maybe it's because I can't believe he's gone.

I was devastated to hear the news of Dr. Benjamin´s death. My deep condolences to Susan, his staff, especially Trish, and all who were fortunate to know him. I was blessed to have known him for 35+ years - from the strip mall in Cropseyville to Saratoga. He was the only doctor n NY I continued to see after moving to Coastal N.C. 14 years ago. Dr. Benjamin was indeed exceptional as a dentist and human being. He was hardworking, exquisitely skilled, knowledgeable, compassionate, reliable, witty, generous- I could go on and on. His amazing work has stood the test of time and so many of us value our Benjamin Smile. His selflessly shared his knowledge and experience with younger dentists and students. We are all so much better for having known him and I hope we can all find comfort in the wonderful memories he has given us.

During a dental emergency, I called Dr. Benjamin when my then regular dentist couldn't see me for 5 weeks. He said meet me in the office. No hesitation. I never saw another dentist except for Dr. B. I will miss his care, dedication, and his never ending commitment to "doing the right thing." I had so much respect for him and his consistent goal to save your teeth. He took great pride in his work as he should have, it was impeccable. We all have lost an icon. Susan, staff, and family, I am sure all that everyone has commented about your husband, family, and friend, is no surprise to you. He was one of a kind. Praying for peace and strength for you all as you navigate this sad and uncertain time.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Benjamin. Condolences to his wife and dental family. He was the best in the business. Dear Susan, I am so sorry for the loss of your dear husband. Please accept my deep condolences. I always enjoyed interactions with him both in East Hills and at your home in Saratoga. Particularly I enjoyed his beautiful smile and welcoming our book club ladies. He gave so much to others through his excellent work as Is evident by the testimonies by so many persons who had the good fortune to know him - a wonderful legacy!

January 12, 2024

(P.S. I am SO going to- every day- floss & brush my teeth, scrape my tongue, use straws if I drink anything acidic, not chew on ice, use stuff- day & night- to combat my persistent "dry mouth", swish around mouthwash regularly... I will combat every element encountered in the life of a mouth to preserve my Benjamin Smile. And, every time, I will be thinking of him.

Condolences to his family and staff who I know will all greatly miss him.

"The Benjamin Smile". Do you have one? I know all his staff projected his perfect smile, as they showed genuine care for us the minute we opened the door for our time with Dr. Ben.
My wife and I have known and have had our teeth, and our hearts cared for since the 1970's. What a wonderful man!!
Dr Ben gave both of us (with the professional care of his capable and friendly staff) the smile he gave to so many.
Here's our memory of a typical office visit to see Dr. Ben...

"Hello my friend, how have you been"? Then the stories and jokes start as we set in the chair.
Visit went like this...
* A bib to cover our shirt.
* Take off the glasses
* Time for xrays.. "don't move"...while he goes to an underground bunker to hit the switch...:)
* Then he brings that giant camera to take "pre" pictures.
* Next comes the needle.... doesn't let you see it as Trisha passes it to him behind my head. "Please close your eyes, don't want any of this to get in you eyes by mistake." With steady hands you then feel a slight pinch and he squeezes a quart of cool novicane to keep me stiil for an hour....
* Then the dreaded "rubber dam" is installed with his "on sale" Harbor Freight players. OUCH!! "I'll get professional dental plyers when business picks up" he quips. :)
* Dr Ben gets the drill and water going while Janine gets the suction/vacuum duty.
"Dr...take your foot off the water pump, your gonna drown him" !!! Says Janine...
Dr Ben then says... "Laska will be sending us a laundry bill for his shirt cleaning. We're not gonna make any money today"
Of course I can't respond with that dam in my mouth, and they know it.. All in fun of course, while Dr. Ben's steady hands work miracles on my teeth.
* This procedure continues for xxxx number of appointments until the final appointment from Dr Ben, with his rock steady and sure hands, as he fits the last tooth into place.
And asks..." Are you ready to look in the mirror, as Trisha, Janine, and Suan all gather to see ...
"THE BENJAMIN SMILE"

My first comment was..."Those are awful big teeth!!! At this moment Dr Ben pulls out his big camera and takes the long awaited for, Final photo, which he says will go in his Rock Star Album.

Then Dr Ben and staff reply in unison... "Enjoy your journey as you tell others how you came to have such a wonderful smile...
"THE BENJAMIN SMILE " !!!!!

We were deeply saddened to hear of our beloved Dr. Ben passing so quickly. A big emptiness in our hearts.
We will hold you, Susan, and staff in our prayers as you reflect on good memories of Dear Dr Ben. over the next days/weeks and find peace knowing how he loved each of you and so, so many more. May his love shine with all of us as a friend not to be forgotten.
So long, Doctor Benjamin....

I am a 30+ year patient of Dr. Benjamin. I followed him from Cropseyville to Saratoga because of his expertise and skills in dentistry. His attitude toward what he felt needed to be done and what could wait sealed my allegiance to him. His positive attitude and knowledge of dentistry was always impressive. I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Benjamin´s passing. I met him this past summer in Saratoga while I was up visiting family & friends. I had temporaries fitted over my upper teeth in NJ a few days prior (while the lab made my porcelain veneers) & while I was in Mrs London´s they shattered while biting into a baguette!!!! I was in agony!!! Not one Dr would see me or help me as it was 5pm on a Sunday & my dr was about 3-4 hours away back in NJ! My mother said let´s call Dr Benjamin & see if he can help, so I did & minutes later he called me back & asked if I could come to his office around 8pm after he got home from dinner on a Sunday evening!!!. He worked on my teeth for hours & relieved all my pain & they looked GORGEOUS!!! He refused to take payment for his services. I started to cry because he was so unbelievably kind. I sent money to St Jude´s on his behalf instead, as he refused to accept any payment. He then called me for days making sure I was ok & enjoying my vacation in upstate - and then I flew to Paris for work without any pain or issues. (& ate more baguettes too!!!) None of that would have been possible without Dr Benjamin. He said he was from a different time in medicine & that he loved what he did ! I´ll never forget him & his kindness & artistry

Over twenty years ago, Dr. Ben became my dentist. I always called him Dr. Ben and when he walked into the cubical I would always say " Hello my dentist" and it would always start a conversation and a story how we met. I will always remember you and our conversations, and so I say to you "Good-bye My Dentist". You will always be remembered .

I'm devastated for our loss. I've only been a patient for a decade or so, and I wish I had met him sooner to avoid all the bad dental experiences that let me to him.
As so many have said, Dr Benjamin made dental visits so pleasant and, yes, fun! As a patient, I trusted him implicitly. He always knew what to do, and he clearly enjoyed the process.
I adored him and the conversations we had. I felt guilty for holding up other patients' appointments because we would just keep talking. Knowing the next patient would receive the same thoughtful care and enjoyable conversation made me feel a little better, of course.
He was a superhero dentist that railed against the multitude of bad ones that focus on profit and speed over preserving our teeth and, ultimately, our health. I can't think of too many healthcare professionals that anyone would care this much about - professionally and personally.
Susan, we've never met, but I'm terribly sorry for your loss. And, of course, the whole family he worked with that are equally amazing; he wouldn't have it any other way, and that's why we trusted you all so much.
He was truly a gem.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Benjamin´s passing. We met him many years ago when he had a little office in Cropseyville. We eventually moved and then followed him to Saratoga. He was one of a kind and his obvious enthusiasm for all things dentistry, always brought a smile to our faces. We will miss our many interesting conversations, some of which included our mutual love of cars. Our thoughts are with his wife, Susan, and his wonderful Staff.

He always told us that we should always ask for the best, especially when it involved our health. Dr. Benjamin, you were the best and you will be missed!

Was fortunate to become friends with Gerald about 16 or so years ago. We talked typically weekly on various dental things and have to say he was the dentist many of us strive to be. A perfectionist and really cared about his patients. I will truly miss him and the connection we had. Let me share a story about us
About 14 years ago I was in Albany to speak at the local meeting for the region. I am walking down the street with a friend and she says "Do you know anyone at the meeting?" I look in front of us and see someone walking towards us and say "Yes in fact here comes a local friend Gerald Benjamin" He just happened to be walking on the sidewalk but was not attending the meeting. What a lucky break, he and I had been friends a few years at that point.

Dearest staff and family of Dr B.
I am so shocked and sad to hear of this news. I recently saw an ad on TV advertising his wonderful practice. I always intended to come back to him when my veneers from 2010/2011 would need to be replaced. I still get compliments on them after all these years.

Tricia, Janine, everyone- I am so sorry to hear of this tragic news! I know both of you have been with him forever! I can only imagine how devastated you are. I also remember his lovely receptionist Betty. I believe she may have retired, but she had the most soothing, melodic voice, and was always so kind and professional when she answered the phone!
She was the very first person a patient would interact with, and I have missed her being there.

I also knew that the only thing that would stop him from practicing his gifted craft, which he loved and was born to do, would be his passing.

Dr. Benjamin was always kind, cheerful and happy; not to mention, he was the very best at his profession!

He must have been a wonderful employer for all of you were with him for so long!
He was also very fortunate to have all of you by his side!
Each of you contributed so much to his practice!
I know he would have been lost without you Janine- you were an angel! I always thought you could take over for him if necessary...lol, because of your talent and the devotion to the work both of you did!

And Tricia- what can I say? You ran the office as if it were your own business, and I am quite certain you could have done it in your sleep, or with your eyes close; that is how excellent you were! Furthermore, you were fair;
You had to make a lot of decisions on his behalf, and in the best interest of his patients.

Each person, all of you-contributed so much!
I was a patient in 2010-2011;
and had to return a couple of years ago, for a minor problem in which he and all of you welcomed me with open arms.

Dr. Benjamin was one of the most down to earth, and kindest, yet extremely skilled professional physicians that I ever had the pleasure of meeting; and am very grateful for having been one of his patients.

My deepest condolences to his wife, family, office staff, colleagues, friends, and fellow patients. He was an amazing man and doctor, who treated everyone with kindness and was blessed with a skill which he bestowed upon his patients.

He will be deeply missed in this community, and personally by me!
May he rest in peace and his family somehow find comfort in the fact that he was a wonderful human being and possessed a superior expertise in his craft!

I was so deeply saddened when I read the office email to notify me of Dr. Benjamin´s sudden passing. I first met Dr. Benjamin in the early-mid 90´s. He was covering for Dr. Purcell during the Christmas holiday. I called Dr. Purcell on behalf of my elderly dad who had suddenly developed a severe tooth ache mid afternoon Christmas Day. Dr. Purcell´s service contacted Dr. Benjamin who phoned me in short order. He treated my dad that evening without his dental assistant or hygienist to assist. He was kind, welcoming and very reassuring to my dad. When he finished his work, Dr. Benjamin advised my dad to call him if he developed any problems, and then advised my dad as to how to proceed with his dentist. That evening defined everything about Dr. Benjamin- Extraordinaire as written in the obituary. Such an accurate and fitting description.
I always viewed any appointment at Dr. Benjamin´s office - be it for a checkup or for any type of restorative work - with anticipation that is typically associated with a fun social time. He set that kind of culture in his office. That culture also translated to the respect and deep caring that he showed for his professional family. Dr. Benjamin´s sharp eye, compassion, quick wit, & sense of humor, along with his amazing professional skills and knowledge made every visit a real joy. I truly never wanted to leave when the appointment was over. The conversation was so rich and fun.
It was clear that Dr Benjamin truly loved and relished his work as a dentist. It was also clear that he loved life.
Dr. Benjamin made a point to share his knowledge and insight in such an interesting and unassuming manner. If he was presented with a challenge during a procedure, Dr. Benjamin would welcome it with his signature professional zest and ease. In the end, Dr. Benjamin would overcome the hurdle, and share with delight how he was able to achieve the desired outcome.
A consummate professional who truly gave his all to his patients, he would remind me at the conclusion of any appointment, that if I ever developed a dental problem, to call him day or night or over the weekend.
At one point, Dr. Benjamin did just that for me. I was in France and needed an antibiotic for a dental problem related to oral surgery. The oral surgeon was unable to call the French pharmacy. I remembered Dr. Benjamin´s advice, and so I called his cell and left a message. In very short order, he contacted the French pharmacy and I was quickly able to have my antibiotic and enjoy the remainder of my vacation. I was extremely grateful to Dr. Benjamin for his help to say the least.
I greatly appreciate that I was able to be a long time patient of Dr. Benjamin. He was an amazing and brilliant dentist, and an incredible human being.

I always looked forward to visiting with the Great Dr. Benjamin. It was always a fun experience and his expertise was beyond reproach. He would always put you at ease with his humor and of course our political debates. Such was the exemplary team you surrounded yourself with Dr. Benjamin with, Jeanie, Trish, Amy, and Shawn. I will miss you dearly Dr. Benjamin especially your kindness and gracious smile. You are truly blessed and may the Good Lord great you with the same kindness you dispensed with everyone you touched. He often told me as he was looking in my mouth that "he could see my house from here"...a punch line from a joke I told him when we first met. I still carry his work and great dental perfection and am proud to have known him. Much love always.

Dear Suan, family and Dr. Benjamin's Staff,
We are so sorry for the loss of Dr. B. My family and I have been going to him for over 35 years. As many of his patients, we took the ride to Saratoga after the move from Tamarac because that's what he meant to us. He was such an extraordinary dentist and person that we knew he was always worth the trip! His perspective on life and his sense of humor were always welcomed as you sat in the chair and listened to him. Our sincere sympathy to you all!

We are so sad and pray for comfort for Susan, friends, family, and his loyal staff.
Over 30 year of dental care, friendship (greeting us each visit with, "hello, my friend), and sharing of heart, he is already greatly missed .
I credit Dr. Benjamin in helping save my life. His encouragement to seek treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering when I was diagnosed with cancer 22 years ago, I believe, is why I am here today.
You inspired us to do what we love because then, it's not work at all, especially when we are helping others.
We have loved and lost you, but are better for it, my friend.

I thought if anyone could live forever it would be you. I came to you at age 23, 43years ago and you were so confident and friendly. We discussed many topics and you made each visit a joy.... What dentist does that? You have a staff that is so friendly and kind, you created that atmosphere... you were truly a gift from God. I will miss you and our banter. My condolences to your wife, what a blessed life she shared with you. Until we meet again!!

I am crushed to hear that Dr. Benjamin is gone. I just saw him before Christmas. He was my dentist for over 30 years. He was worth traveling an hour for!! I will miss our silly and/or serious conversations about a myriad of things. He helped me through so many dental issues. He always spent so much time explaining things to me. It will be hard to find someone that I can trust as much and who has such amazing talent. The world has lost a gem. Thank you!

He was my dentist from 1981 to the present. He was a perfectionist and highly skilled. He was a friend as well and had a great sense of humor. I last saw him in the fall. I asked to not retire because my family needed him. He said he had no intention of retiring. We will miss him.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Benjamin´s family, friends, and staff. As one his patient's, I was blessed to be under his care. He was one of a kind person and dentist- kind, caring, brilliant, funny , and beyond meticulous. I waited 15 years (as did he) to have him give me the `Benjamin Smile´ and it was worth the wait. There will never be another Dr. Benjamin, never a dentist more humane and geniune. May his soul rest in peace and he will be greatly missed.

I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Benjamin and have him as my dentist for just a few short years. After we moved to Boston in 2019, I had my dental work (from another dentist) fall out and break a tooth...i drove three hours to get it fixed by Dr. Benjamin. His professionalism and excellence are the high bar by which I judge all my doctors ever since. He took the time to mentor my wife who is a dentist, talked to me like an old friend, laughed deep and from his heart, and it was infectious. I am proud to walk around with his work in my mouth, and now when I am smiling, I'm bringing his joy with me to share with another person who might need it. Rest in peace Dr. Benjamin, an exceptional human.

I am incredibly sad to hear of Dr. B's passing. I was a patient of Dr. Benjamin's for many years. He was a true professional and a master of his profession. Most of all he was the most sincere, kindest and compassionate man. He and his staff took extraordinary care of me and my smile. I will forever be grateful for him "doing the right thing" and for having had the pleasure of knowing him. My sincerest condolences to his wife, family and staff. There are no words to express how much you will be missed.

Dr. Benjamin was simply the best and one of a kind. I never met anyone who loved their job more than he did and going to his office was a pleasure. I was lucky enough to find him when looking to get a tooth fixed, which he did beautifully and then I stayed with him. His work was top notch and he did the right thing every time. You went to him if you were a "tooth person" because he would do what was right and not what insurance dictated, I wish there were more medical professionals like him. Thank you Dr. Benjamin, you will be greatly missed. My condolences to his wife, family, friends and his lovely staff.

Dr. Benjamin was more than a dentist. While his professional technique was beyond perfection, but the depth of his character and his dedication to his patients were beyond extraordinary. Words cannot express my appreciation for the care he gave to me and my family for almost 40 years. After he moved his practice an hour away, we followed him because his care was incomparable. He inspired a trust that is so rare in medicine today. I cannot express how truly we will miss him and I´m sure I am not alone. He was more than a dentist. He was our friend. May God keep him in a special place.

I am devastated. He was my dentist for the last 20+ years. He treated all of us like he would treat his family. He was an extremely talented, knowledgeable and professional as a Doctor but what stands out to me is his humanity. My sincerest condolences to his wife, friends and staff. There is no one like him and he will be missed.

There are no words to express how saddened I was to hear of Dr. Benjamin's passing. Dr. Benjamin always greeted you with a smile and a heartfelt how are you? My son, Andrew, always got a charge at the comment, "You have the best teeth in the entire family!" after every appointment. This says a lot after 40 years of seeing the best dentist around. He will be deeply missed.

I am beyond heartbroken as I have been a patient of Dr Benjamin´s for 35 years. He was one in a million and truly cared about each and every one of his patients. I will greatly miss our conversations but most of all the phenomenal care he has given me all these years. I am going to miss him in countless ways. I still can´t believe it. Rest easy Dr B and thank you for everything you have given me. I miss you friend!
