Henrietta, I was just thinking about you and Joel and telling stories about our amazing trip to Norway, the Shetland Islands and the U.K. when I worked on the cruise ship and you came as part of the Cornell crowd. You two made such a remarkable impression on me and I still have the beautiful scarf that you gave me. I remember Joel telling me "never to refuse champagne because life should always be celebrated," and that "you could fall in love at any age" -- he was so wise. He told me his story about meeting you after so many years in an antique shop and having that special flutter in his heart. "It was a good lunch" he said after taking you to lunch that day. I also remember how funny he was, calling my bus "The Patty Wagon," and saying that you and a lot of your friends had a "Blackbelt in shopping." I met you about 23 years ago and you probably don't remember me and my sister Sue, but I wanted you to know how much of an impact you had on me at a time when I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life and fearful of settling down. Joel's encouragement and optimism helped guide me in the right direction and I am now happily married and a mom too, and I am enjoying life up in Boston as a writer. I am so sorry about Joel's passing, and I realize that I am seven years late on my condolences, but I wanted you to know that the world is truly a better place because he lived. I'm so happy to have spent that special week with you both so many years ago. I included a picture of me (right), my sister Sue and Joel.
All my best,
Patty Lenz Bovie
