JOHN CULBERTSON Obituary

CULBERTSON--John "Jack" Harrison Junior, Beloved father, husband, brother, son, and friend departed this earth on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 7:10pm at the age of 62. Jack is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Broaddus Culbertson, and his children, Kirby Steele Culbertson (25), John "Jake" Harrison Culbertson III (22), and Katharine Louise Culbertson (19); his mother, Grace Culbertson; and his sisters, Marian Burke, and Katharine Prentice. Jack was born on July 23, 1951, in Morristown, NJ to Mr. and Mrs. John H. Culbertson Sr. Jack attended The Peck Elementary School, and The Lawrenceville School in Princeton, NJ, class of 1970. Growing up, Jack attended the Camp Timanous in Raymond, ME, which shaped his lifelong passion for the outdoors. Jack graduated from The University of California, Berkeley, in 1974. He attended Emory University Medical School, graduating in 1978. Jack continued at Emory for his internship in general surgery from 1978-79, residency in general surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI from 1981-81, and residency in plastic surgery at Emory from 1982-84. He joined Emory as a faculty member in 1986. In addition to his exceptional work with patients at Emory, he held a strong belief in the importance of education and training for the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons. He put that belief into action as Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services at Grady Memorial Hospital, mentoring hundreds of plastic and reconstructive surgery residents during his 27 years at Emory. He also served as Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Chief in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown, and Section Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. For many years, Dr. Culbertson annually travelled with his students to Shiprock Northern Navajo Medical Center in New Mexico, and received the Navajo Area Indian Health Service Area Director's Award for Outstanding Health Care Provider in 1997. Jack was a teacher in all respects of life, sharing his knowledge and passion for the world with his friends and family. Jack was a curious and energetic man, demonstrated through his passions for flying, skiing, fly-fishing, ice hockey, carpentry, and mountaineering. He frequently spent time in the outdoors and logged hundreds of hours flying to Maine and Telluride. His sense of adventure was contagious to those closest to him, cultivating a wonder of the world and a desire to see and learn from all experiences. A celebration of the life of Jack Culbertson will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 3pm at Peachtree Presbyterian, 3434 Roswell Road NW, Atlanta, GA, 30305. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Doctors Without Borders or Island Heritage Trust, P.O. Box 42, Deer Isle, ME 04627.

I was in Texas completing some military training... I am sadden that I didn't learn of this tragic news until now! I did a consultation with Dr. Culbertson some years ago. And I was thinking about going to see him again. When I began looking up his office information, all of the articles about his death and plane crash came up. I am still in a state of SHOCK! I am deeply sadden by this news.

Jack was my best friend at Camp Timanous for seven years. We spent so much time roaming the woods together, and exploring inlets to Panther Pond by canoe, that we often got into trouble together. We were friendly rivals in archery and swimming, and constantly pushed each other to do better. Camp cast a spell on us both and made us love Maine. Jack later bought land in Raymond, Maine, and I bought land in Brooksville, Maine, where (I learned later) he had once looked. I saw him last in 1995 when we were both dropping daughters at Wohelo, the sister camp to Timanous. We picked up where we had left off 31 years earlier. Unfortunately we didn't have nearly enough time to catch up, and the emails we traded before and after were not nearly an adequate substitute. I admired his curiosity, his spirit of adventure, and his sympathy for all living things. I miss his good company, and send my condolences to his family. --Peter Suber.

I met Dr Culbertson in sept this yr. I have a very difficult condition and was hoping he would do my major surgery. He took pics said he would think on it and call me. He did and said he was so afraid of the outcome. I said. You are the boss and if you say no then no it is. I am a nurse and I could see the wheels turning in his head. Met him one time and had great respect for him. He cared about his patients. I am. So sorry for your loss. Hang onto the memories.

Such sad news, may God bless your family at the loss of such a caring compassionate man. My daughter was three years old when she was bit by a dog in the face. The dog literally bit the nose off her face. We were blessed to have DrCulbertson on duty at Emory when she was brought in. He did a wonderful job not only repairing her face but in reassuring us. His kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. He did several more surgeries on her face over the years and we will be forever grateful for his expertise and skill. When our insurance company did not want to pay for the last surgery calling it cosmetic, he did it for us at no cost. Melanie is now sixteen years old, every time I look at her I will be reminded of Dr Culberson and his concern and care for a little girl who has grown into a beautiful young lady thanks to him. May God bless your family, and know that you are I. Our prayers.

Culbertson family, I share your loss. Your husband/father has taken care of me for a number of years, since Dr. Jones left Emory. Dr. Jones told me not to worry about a thing and I'd be in the best hands with Dr. Culbertson. I saw him more than I see family members and friends! As a five time survivor of breast cancer, over the last 25 years, Dr. Culbertson and I had many conversations when I'd have to have surgeries, many were quite amusing and light hearted re why I wanted him to implant Dolly Pardon size breast in my size 6 frame!! His reply would always be, "Tish, you'd fall forward," and my response would always be, "Send me for physical therapy, Doc!!" He had such a great sense of humor and he will truly be missed.

I am an OR nurse and worked with Dr. Culbertson at Paces Plastic Surgery. He was such a cool guy to work with, caring, professional, skilled, laid-back, funny. I was so sad to hear the news. He will be missed by so many, I can't even imagine what his family, his patients, his close co-workers must be going through at this time. My heart goes out to all of you.

Kirby, Jake and Kate,

It goes without saying that your father was an amazing man, and he loved and talked about you guys so very often. He was so proud of each one of you. We have all suffered a huge loss. Jack was like to father to all of us at Emory. He taught us to be curious and to never settle for the status quo. He taught us confidence as surgeons, and he believed in us when we didn't believe in ourselves. He allowed us to make mistakes, so we could grow and learn. And most of all, he taught us humility and made us laugh. Jack lived his life on his own terms, with enthusiasm for every adventure, large and small. I love Jack so much and will miss him dearly. You guys are lucky to have had such an amazing Dad! He was taken away from all of us much to soon. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I met Dr. Culbertson in 2008 in association with his fellows program. Shortly thereafter he became my trusted go-to-doc at Paces Plastic. I chose Dr. Jack because of his credentials but soon learned there was much more to this human being than a pedigree. He could connect with his patients in a way that made them feel comfortable and confident. He had great listening skills and always tried to understand and please his patients. More importantly....a couple of my appointments had to be rescheduled because Jack was accompanying his kids to start the school year. I thought to myself..."now this is a person who has their priorities in order." We will miss you Dr. Jack.

Dr Culbertson was truly an amazing human being. What my husband and I noticed about him always was his calm and even demeanor. We always felt he had our best interest in mind. He did an amazing reconstruction job for me after my mastectomy in 2011, and I will never forget him. I feel so honored to have been his patient! May God richly bless his family in these difficult days and give them peace and strength.

Jack and I grew up just a few miles from each other in New jersey and also attended Peck and Lawrenceville Schools together. His energy and optimistic demeanor was contagious and he always seemed to make those around him feel more comfortable. One of the most memorable moments I have of Jack was watching him ride an old Indian motorcycle on to the field during a football game at Lawrenceville. He jumped off the cycle and went into a cheerleading routine that inspired the crowd and seemed to psych up the team.
He will be missed by me and many of our fellow classmates. Virtus Semper Viridis, Jack!

I had the great opportunity of knowing Dr. Culbertson, he gave me the nickname chief, because he didn't want to end up on suspension, he had a smile that would luminate the room, you will be forever missed, may you rest in perfect peace.

Dear Culbertson Family and Friends,
I am so sorry to hear of Dr Culbertson passing. The community and family has lost a great person in our lives.
In December 2009, my father had an open heart surgery that did not go well. Dad was ready to give up and Dr Culbertson gave my father hope and the will to live. He repaired my father and gave him his life back.
Today, I told my father of Dr Culbertsons passing. He gives his sincere condolences and expressed his thankfulness for Dr Culbertsons care and skill.
My sincerest condolences and may God give you all comfort in your loss.

To Dr. Culbertson's family I am so sorry for your loss and the world's loss. He was an outstanding human being. I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Culbertson's passing on the news. I didn't know him personally, but his death reminded me of my husband's father. He was also a surgeon in Huntsville, AL and died in a plane crash Dec 8th thirty one years ago when my husband was 12yo. I'll never understand when someone so young and talented is taken too early. He will never be forgotten and neither will Dr. Culbertson. His memory will live on in all of the people he loved and the lives he touched with his generosity, kindness, knowledge and joy for life. We are thinking of you and praying you find peace during this time.

On Jan. 11, 2011, Dr. Culbertson reconstructed a "new" nose for me after 60% was removed due to cancer. I feel like I have lost a good friend, and will not only have him in my heart, but on my face, forever.
