JOHN DORRIAN Obituary

DORRIAN--John F., of New York City, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019 at the age of 55. John was born on April 24, 1964, in New York, NY, to John and Carol Dorrian. He was a proud alumni of St. Davids School, Iona Prep and St. Louis University, where he played his favorite sport, soccer. Johnny was a charismatic and charming entrepreneur who created wildly successful bars and nightclubs that drew crowds and celebrities, including The Mill on New York's Upper East Side, Rebar in Chelsea and South Beach, Miami, and Suite 16 in Chelsea. A passionate cinephile, Johnny wrote and produced the award-winning feature film, "The Deli," with a notable cast. Magnetic and generous, Johnny was blessed with legions of lifelong friends who were the focus of his life. The second oldest of eight siblings, Johnny also took the role of oldest brother very seriously and spent a great deal of time with his family. A meat and potatoes guy, Johnny took great delight in the Allman Brothers, Formula Atlantic Racing and soccer. John will be greatly missed by his parents, his seven siblings; Laura Vander Schauw of Bethlehem, PA (Arthur), Michael J. Dorrian of Locust Valley, NY (Vaughn), Mary Bettis of Nashville, TN (John), Carol Carbonetti of New York (Anthony), Christopher Dorrian of New York (Amy), Daniel Dorrian of New York, James Dorrian of New York (Rebecca), along with 15 nieces and nephews. Visiting on Tuesday, December 10, 4-8pm at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Avenue, New York, NY. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, 869 Lexington Avenue.

I became aware of the movie, "The Deli" just recently. The building and store at 255 Union Ave, New Rochelle, NY was owned by my grandparents and was where my father and his siblings were raised. They all moved to California in the late 50s leaving New Rochelle, NY for the Golden State. I heard fantastic stories about what happened in this store and what it meant to the neighborhood. LIttle did I know, someone would make a Hollywood movie about it. Does anyone know how John Dorrian and John Gallagher based this upon? If anyone can fill in the blanks for me my family (especially my kids) would really enjoy it. I can be reached at 65ampsLondon 'at symbol' Gmail dot com. Thank you bob sacco - Note I added historical photos of my family at this building.

John Dorrian was the producer and writer for the movie "The Deli." The movie was filmed at my Father's home/business (downstairs store). I found out about this 20 years later after the passing of John. I grew up with legendary stories from my father regarding what happened daily in this legendary West New Rochelle store. To this day, I don't know if this was based on my family, the neighborhood or not. But the timelines match. If anyone knows the story. I've attached family photos taken at this location. Quick with a laugh, an arm around the shoulder or a welcome.
After a glance asking what have you been up to and on from there.
Gone to soon Johnny

A fine broth of a man who showed me more kindness than I could ever repay. I see the smile , that smile, when he would say my name. RIP...

My deepest condolences to the Dorrian family. My heart hurts hearing this news. I worked for Johnny at Suite 16 in NYC. He was charismatic, extremely funny and a wonderful story teller. I was booking bands there and he introduced me to musicians, managers and some creative and eclectic people. He was a natural connector and a warm soul. I remember him telling me he would keep a pen and paper by his bed for when he got ideas and inspirations or when he needed to make lists. He woke up in the middle of the night often to write. He encouraged me to do the same. He was so excited about The Deli. I will miss you Johnny. Even though I hadn't seen you in years, I remember your spirit and I am sending love and strength to your family and friends.

Johnny was the real deal. He welcomed this out of towner in the late 80s and taught me a thing or ten about being a New Yorker. He embodied the best of humanity and was beloved for that. He made every room he appeared in brighter, and everyone in that room feel more special. My deepest condolences to his family - especially his parents, and for Jack who taught me the importance of playing backgammon. To his siblings - many I got to know over the years and Jimmy who has some big shoes to fill. Carry that magic your brother shared with the world. Love to all of you.

Johnny was truly my brother. The news is devastating. A million memories of his larger than life spirit, many involving our movie THE DELI, which I know he was inordinately proud of, considered an indie cult classic and his legacy. My deepest condolences to all the Dorrians. Johnny is at peace.

Johnny was the guy running in the door to help you when everyone else was running out. He helped and touched so many people in his short life, that is why God wants him in Heaven. I Love You MY BROTHER FOREVER. I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE END, IT IS A BEGINNING for You. Johnny Boy

I learned a lot and gained a lot by knowing John, by working with him, creating with him, and just talking with him. Not just a warm light, but a uniquely bright energy has moved on but his positive personally human effect remains forever with those still here who cherish our memories of him, who will as well share those memories, ever fondly, with each other.
