JOHN HUGHES Obituary

HUGHES--John Boland, 75, died August 21, 2021, of Alzheimer's disease. He was the husband of Rosalie Day Hughes. He was born in Philadelphia to the late Dr. Joseph F. and Anne Opie Hughes. John was particularly proud to be the grandson of Dr. Eugene Opie, a distinguished pathologist at Rockefeller University. John was a graduate of the Haverford School, Yale '67, and Harvard Medical School '71. He served, as he always said, on "the Eastern Front" during the Viet Nam War, as a physician in Washington D.C. John and Rosalie lived on Manhattan's Upper West Side for fifty years and retired to Annisquam, where they had long spent summers, in 2017. The adjustment was a bit rough with no super to call, but, eventually, found they could light the woodstove without filling the house with smoke. Until concluding that medicine involved too many patients, John worked as a physician in NYC and for Pan Am Airlines which offered stand- by flights around the world as a perk. He made the transition to medical technology allowing him to travel to the former Soviet Union. He taught himself Russian listening to Pimsleur tapes while jogging through Central Park. A lot of people thought he was a spy, but we're pretty sure he wasn't. John loved to travel, and until the very end was planning his next trip: Argentina. He and Rosalie traveled around the world for their honeymoon, funded by a six week locum in Saudi Arabia where John treated his first tarantula bite and Rosalie got pinched in bazaars. In addition to his wife, Rosalie, John is survived by their three daughters, Lindsay Keith Hughes Wands and her husband Michael of Needham, Mary Welby Scott Hughes Lamb and her husband Sean of New York, and Elizabeth Day Hughes of Washington Heights, four grandchildren, Maisie, James and Andrew Wands, and Elizabeth Lamb. He is also survived by siblings William, Thomas, Sally and David and their families. John was predeceased by Lynne Floyd, Joseph and James Hughes. Contributions may be made in John's name to Young Adult Institute, 220 E 42nd St, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10017, which has been instrumental in his daughter Eliza's care.

John´s passing creates too wide a breach. Knowing him first through my brother Chaz/Sam (they went to med school together), then with magnificent Rosalie, then with waves of family, I counted on him to be there regardless of space and time. John visited Sam in Bangkok late in my brother´s illness, one of many visits, rollicks, and kindnesses beyond treasure. Of course John´s humor and back-of-throat snicker are forever. I remember his personal Christmas card of a currency gift envelope with his face in the president´s oval. What an extraordinary family he created. How glorious to know them and peerless John.
