JOHN MORRISSEY Obituary

MORRISSEY--John Carroll, born September 2, 1914 in New York City, died April 24, 2021 in San Francisco, CA, son of the late Estelle (Caine) and Edward J. Morrissey, raised in Larchmont and New Haven. Educated at Horace Mann and Taft, he earned his BA (Phi Beta Kappa) and LLB at Yale, and his JSD at NYU, practicing law in New York City, Washington, DC, and California. A man of exceptional determination, faith, and intellectual curiosity, he embraced an extraordinarily rich and long life. His WWII Army service included assignments at the Office of the Army Chief of Staff in DC and on General Dwight Eisenhower's staff in Europe. (In Army Reserves until 1974, he retired as a Colonel.) As a Department of Defense civilian lawyer, he liaised with the Atomic Energy Commission and acted as general counsel of the Defense Electric Power Administration. As a Pacific Gas & Electric Company attorney (1953-79 ending as Vice President and General Counsel), he handled permit proceedings for the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. Married to Eileen Colligan, they raised a family of eight children. His commitment to justice and fairness was reflected in his civic leadership, notably for the SF Human Rights Commission. He thrived in the fellowship of clubs, in his children's many activities and, especially, through his 66 years of devoted loving marriage with Eileen. Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by his children, Jay Edward (Marilyn McFarland), Ellen Jenkins (James), Katherine (Kim Lowry), John (Colleen Shea), Patricia, Richard (Anne Ballinger), Brian, and Peter (Anne Heller) Morrissey; and nine grandchildren.

What a wonderful man! What an amazing life! He was fortunate, but used his gifts so well. I have saved his beautiful obit for inspiration. He was born one year after my mom, and if I had worked at PG&E just a little earlier . . . well, my life parallels his in many ways. I believe his fragrance lingers, and he's over there planning the party already. God bless his family!

I almost never buy a Chron these days, but for some reason, that day I did -- in time to marvel at this wonderful life and pray for him and his family. I was a "temp" worker on call for PG&E in the '80's, always in the Law Dept. I so miss the good energy of our City and am working on a book (We Had Love) about my 30 years there, 1972-2002. After a USAF stint, I washed up in the City and was baptized at Old Saint Mary's. I was an early word processor and beta tester. Now in Tahoe, waiting to move to Placerville, waiting for lockdown to end, pushing 80 myself, well, I was over the moon, so uplifted, to read about this beautiful life. God bless!

I was secretary to John Morrissey from 1959 to 1970 while at PGandE. I am now 89 and had numerous bosses over time but none equal to John morrissey. He was a wonderful person. As each of his children entered school up went the school picture placed on his book shelf in the office. I really enjoyed that. I never knew of his impressive career. God bless the family.
