JUDITH WEITZMAN Obituary

WEITZMAN--Judith Harris. (May 2, 1926 -- February 11, 2022). Survived by her son Daniel Weitzman, his wife Kirsty Meares; and by her daughter, Jill Weitzman Fenichell, and her husband David Fenichell. Also survived by her granddaughter Zoe Rose Weitzman and her husband, Jonathan Gertman, and grandsons Alexander Charles Fenichell and Jonas Graham Weitzman. Judy was the youngest daughter of Adriel Harris and Nathalie Plough Harris. Sisters Joan, Erica and Abby predeceased her. Aunt to Jack Meltesen and his wife Dianne; Chris Meltesen and his wife Tina Raver, Conrad Krebs, Eric Krebs and his wife Suzanne, Jefferey Glidden (deceased) and Brian Glidden and his wife Marianne. Judy was married to George H. Weitzman who was a B. Arch from Columbia. He died in 1958. Judy Weitzman was multi- talented. She studied drawing and sculpture, and circled back for a BA from Fordham in her 60s. She wrote short stories and screenplays. She worked at Watson-Guptill, WNET/Channel 13, and Columbia University before opening her own shop on Warren Street in Hudson, NY, called Judith Harris Antiques. Judy cherished theater, reading, gardening, jazz, the New York Times crossword, lemon-ginger cookies, and time with family and friends. She was an avid antiwar and anti-racism activist. She protested segregated housing, marched against the Vietnam War, and most recently, distributed cookies to Occupy Wall Street demonstrators. While forward- thinking, Judy never forgot the etiquette she was raised with; throughout her life, she celebrated decorum and rejected bigheadedness. While ensconced at the New Jewish Home, she looked out the window, marveling at the blue skies rather than focusing on her own pain. Her eternal, loving optimism, as well as her pointed critiques of fakes and fascists, will be greatly missed. Commemorate Judy's life by planting something, petting your dogs and cats, or donating to the NAACP.
