KYNASTON MCSHINE Obituary

MCSHINE--Kynaston.

The Board of Directors and staff of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts mourn the death of curator Kynaston McShine. His magisterial retrospective of Andy Warhol's work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1989, two years after the artist's death, marked the beginning of three decades of work on his part on behalf of Warhol's legacy. As founder of the Art Advisory Committee, he was instrumental in helping to organize the Foundation's contribution to the Founding Collection of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and in initiating the Foundation's participation and support of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonne of Paintings, Sculptures, and Drawings. With his passing, we have lost an esteemed colleague, trusted advisor, and revered friend.

Great sympathies to the family of Kynaston McShine. His vision impacted the lives of young artists and myself from the seventies onward. With great thanks, now in peace.

In the early 70's I studied w/Kynaston at SVA, changing the way I thought about art past and present. For several years afterward I ran errands and generally assisted him, entrusted with the keys to his loft on Broadway. The kindness and patience he extended to Kathleen and I will not be forgotten.
