L. JAY TENENBAUM

TENENBAUM--L. Jay. Renowned arbitrageur and philanthropist L. Jay Tenenbaum died peacefully at his Woodside, California home on January 16, 2011. He was 88. L. Jay grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Vanderbilt University. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for his service. L. Jay joined Goldman Sachs in 1953 and went on to head the Trading and Arbitrage department. A great source of professional pride was hiring and training some of the firm's most distinguished future leaders. He retired in 1976. Following retirement, L. Jay served as vice-chairman of the board of the San Francisco Ballet; board member of the Commonwealth Club of California, Youth Tennis Advantage, KQED and Stern Grove Association; and Deputy Chief of Protocol of San Francisco under Mayor Frank Jordan. L. Jay is survived by his wife, Gretchen; his sons and their wives, Harry (Rafaela), Bruce (Julie), Kurt (Kristina); his granddaughter, Layne; and his sister, Joy Dunkelman (Mel). The family recognizes those who cared for L. Jay during his illness and the extraordinary compassion he received both at home and at the Stanford University Hospital. A memorial will be held today, Saturday, January 22 at 1:00pm at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton, California. Donations in L. Jay's memory may be directed to the San Francisco Ballet, or the Commonwealth Club. A celebration of his life is being planned in New York City for later this year.
