LARRY CONDON Obituary

CONDON--Larry E. The Board and Staff of The Public Theater deeply mourn the loss of our beloved friend, longtime Board member, and Honorary Council Member, Larry E. Condon. Larry was a passionate advocate for the arts and a transformational supporter of The Public. As the standard bearer for the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, he served on The Public's board from 1989 to 2001 and on the honorary council from 2020 until his passing. Larry's visionary leadership and philanthropic dedication were pivotal in shaping The Public Theater's legacy and ensuring its future. His contributions, alongside those of his dear friend and unrivaled philanthropic force LuEsther T. Mertz and the Trust, have profoundly impacted countless theatergoers, playwrights, artists, and cultural workers--a legacy that will inspire and resonate for generations. We will deeply miss his wisdom, his infectious smile, and his unwavering support. Our thoughts are with his sister and brother, nephews, and his community of many friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Larry was a wonderful man and a great friend of my brother-in-law, Jesse Sommer. He later became a friend of mine because of his gracious generosity. The intensive domestic study-abroad program for BFA and MA dance students I directed, FSU in NYC, met weekly in the conference room of the Mertz Gilmore Foundation for their history and theory class; plus, MGF hosted some students as interns so they could learn the in-the-trenches work of running a successful Foundation. These were Invaluable and life-changing opportunities, and several of those students now work in managerial arts administration while maintaining their dancing careers. Larry passed on life sustaining treasures in the arts. Sending you love Larry, and sending my admiration and support to Diane, the one other Condon I met.

An extraordinary individual Larry is a master of helping others. Having a positive attitude is the hallmark of Larry and his ability to get work done a with a smile. Larry would consume projects to make his community and the world a better place. He now has joined his partner in heaven and we wish John and Larry God Speed.

A special person who will be greatly missed RIP Larry

Larry Condon was a great friend of my late
husband, Lewis B. Cullman. They worked together with GREGORY LONG to assure New
Yorkers of a magnificent, historic garden in their
midst...which assured the beauty of NATURE
a secure space in our city. There were always new
ideas about the science, education of young global botanists, and simply the maintenance of
the land...which needed visionary patrons.

I salute the memory of Larry, whose warmth and
smile was so memorable. I could always count
on a fine cultural conversation with Larry, Gregory and Jac Venza on the latest news in the worlds
of Dance, Theatre and Film.

Sincerely,
Louise Hirschfeld Cullman
