LEONARD TOW Obituary

TOW--Leonard. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons mourns the passing of Leonard Tow, our friend and benefactor, who has generously supported neuroscience research at our institution for over 20 years. In honor and memory of his wife Claire, he established the Claire Tow Center for Motor Neuron Biology and Disease at Columbia, a world-leading center of research on ALS, spinal muscular atrophy, GLUT1 deficiency syndrome, and other neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Tow also established the Claire Tow Professorships in Motor Neuron Disorders, and, through the Tow Foundation, supported the crucial work of our Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center, sustaining our efforts both in research and in patient care, including plans to establish the Claire Tow Ventilatory Care Program. We are honored to have our institution forever associated with Len and Claire, and we offer our condolences to his children, Frank, Andrew, and Emily; his grandchildren and extended family, and the many friends and associates who were fortunate enough to know him and benefit from his wisdom and generosity, his warmth and compassion. Len was a major factor in determining my move to the US to continue my work on ALS and SMA at Columbia. He was a warm friend, an engaged supporter and, when necessary, a stern critic! I have so many fond memories and send warm wishes from Salome and myself to Emily, Andrew and the whole family.
