LIZ SMITH Obituary

SMITH--Liz.

The Board and Staff of The New York Landmarks Conservancy celebrate the life and legacy of our Advisory Board Member and dear friend Liz Smith. We honored Liz as a "Living Landmark" in 1996. After that, she hosted our annual "Living Landmarks" gala for the next 15 years. Her wit and charm made it "one of the liveliest parties in town," as she wrote herself, and she enticed many of her famous friends to be honored. Liz loved New York and lent her considerable drawing power to many worthy causes. But it was the Mexican lunches, notes, and calls in between the galas where we were honored to share in her warmth and friendship. At one Conservancy membership event, she drew cheers by saying, "You mean I've been hanging around with celebrities all these years when I could have been with preservationists!" We will be forever grateful that she was with us. Lloyd P. Zuckerberg, Chair, Peg Breen, President

Goodbye to the Grande Dame of Dish Liz Smith,
Liz Smith, the syndicated Longtime Queen gossip columnist whose mixture of banter, barbs, and bon mots about the glitterati helped her climb the A - list as high as many of the celebrities she covered. "Liz" was syndicated for years in 60 to 70 other news papers, even as she appeared on television news and entertainment programs and wrote magazine articles and books. She spent five years as news producer for NBC - TV. She worked for Alan Funt on Candid Camera. Smith appear daily as gossip column on WNBC TV'S Live at Five and stayed with the program for Eleven years. She won a Emmy for the her Reporting on Live at Five for WNBC in 1985. I used to watch her doing the Celebrity Gossip News on WNBC TV at Five. Also, She was not an exceptional writer or reporter, although there were occasional scoops-the 1990 splits of Donald and Ivana Trump, Madonna's 1996 pregnacy. A great, excellent gossip columnist she was to cover, reporter the news of celebrity that we wanted to hear. Thanks for the memories, laughter that you have given to us and she will be missed, yet not to forgotten. Liz was greeted when she walk through those pearly gates, has reunited with some of her old friends, having drinks while they are talking. My thoughts, prayers are with Liz's Family...

Liz Smith was a very well-known celebrity who kept the public abreast of celebrity going-ons. I was not aware of her age but she lived a long glamorous life. May the family take memories of Liz and use those memories to move forward emotionally. May your time spent with her direct you to look to the hope of seeing her again without her aging, getting sick and without dying.

November 13, 2017

Liz was a blast to be around and a genuine friend to all she took under her wing. I think some of these old friends who passed before her greeted her at the pearly gates and probably asked her what took her so long... I can see Ann Richards standing there smiling, arms wide open, waiting for her dear friend. A great person, another that we won't see the likes of, ever again.
