I can’t believe next month it will be 6 years since Mr. Weitz had passed on. He was a great boss and humanitarian. I will always remember when I
worked at Foodtown here on Long Island, he always had a pleasant word to say to us, his cashiers. I still get together with some of the cashiers who have since retired and we reminisce about our working days at Foodtown. We all miss him. Rest In Peace Mr. Weitz.

Having long since retired, I'm just now learning of Mel's passing. Representing a Fortune 500 consumer products company some 30-years ago, I would call on Mel's store in Pt Jefferson Station three times a week. I'd see him there, walking the sales floor with his store director and his son, Steve, at least once a week.
As mentioned above, one of Mel's many successful merchandising strategies was the introduction of "bulk" products, a category much more familiar to box store consumers. He approached me one day about our company's bulk lines, asking how soon our fleet could deliver. I obliged him by driving ten miles to our depot, loading his order in the back of my company station wagon and delivering it myself at 6 PM. I knew he appreciated this favor because he personally thanked me the next time we met at Pt Jeff. Within one week, our bulk items were authorized for stocking in every Mel's Foodtown.
I found Mel to be an easily accessible, hands-on innovator who knew exactly how to run a retail store. Today's grocery trade owes him a debt of thanks.

I did not know Mr. Weitz personally, but I met him one day back in the 80s at his store in Hewlett. He approached me introduced himself, and asked how I enjoyed shopping at his store. I said I liked the store but was having difficulty finding an item. He led me to the appropriate aisle and helped me find what I was looking for. I remember it as a pleasant experience with a very nice gentleman.

Yes, it has been a few years now since Mr. Wietz had passed away, but all of us that worked for him at his Foodtown Stores will never forget what a kind and caring and humanitarian person he was. He always had a smile for all of us cashiers and for everybody! We all will never forget him. If all other buisnessmen would be like him it would be a better world. May you Rest In Peace.

To the Wietz Family, My heartfelt condolences. Mr. Wietz was a great boss. I meant to write awhile back but I never got around to it. I worked for Mr.Wietz at his East Meadow store from 1982 till 1994 when I was transferred to his new store he opened up in East Northport. I stayed there during the transformation to when he sold to Stop And Shop. I just retired after all these years. It would have been 36 years had he still owned them. He was a great employer, a good and fair, and caring buisnessman.

I have nothing but great memories of Mr Weitz. I grew up around the corner from Foodtown in East Rockaway. My first job was in his office. He was always so kind to me. I remember one time asking him about the picture hanging behind his desk of a Naval Ship which was on fire. Mr Weitz invited me into his office and sat me down and told me the story of how he survived when the Japanese bombed his ship. I never forgot that story as well as all the times he would greet me with a smile when I came to work. He even introduced me to Frank Perdue. You will be truly missed Mr Weitz. Rest Easy and Thankyou.

I remember when Mel managed Big Apple! I used to do the food shopping a lot as a little kid and I always ran out of money...lol!!! I'd run to Mel in what looked like a wooden box of an office and tell him I ran short! Time and time again it was always ok ...he smiled and waved on the cashier! I remember as this young kid, I thought we must have been related!! I felt so close to him. I just remember him always smiling! I'm so happy to hear what a wonderful life he had. P.s I always ran back and paid my shortages after bringing the groceries home! My thoughts are with his family, I smile when I think of Mel.

I am so sorry for your loss my thoughts and prayers are with the family. I remember his sincere generosity when ever our community of East Rockaway NY needed food or supplies for a fund raisers. All we had to do was go to our home town Foodtown and get supplied with what we needed. Especially being in the local Fire Department every time we needed something he never said no and wanted to give more. And he hired us as kids helping during the summer and was one of the first jobs allot of us had. I still refer to that store as Foodtown no matter what's in the location now. It was a staple growing up in my life and will never forget him for being part of it. Douglas Torborg of East Rockaway NY.

Anyone of my era growing up on Long Island will be saddened by this news. Foodtowns were very special stores and you could feel the love in each of his 17 stores. Many memories of shopping with my Mom in the small Oceanside store on Long beach road are vivid and make my heart fill up. I then had the privilege of selling Tropicana orange juice in the 90's and the Foodtowns were my favorite accounts. I miss the small hometown feel and courteous atmosphere that this small supermarket chain provided. Mel, you may have not known me, but I knew you and am grateful. My condolences to the family.
